The last few days have shown once again that all EU Member States must pull together when it comes to the fight against illegal migration. If we want common asylum and migration rules for Europe, every Member State must play by rules. (CB) 1/2

Die aktuellen Entwicklungen in Spanien sind ein deutliches Warnsignal – wir beobachten die Lage sehr genau und ich bin dazu in engem Austausch mit EU-Kommissar Magnus Brunner, Europaministerin Claudia Bauer und Innenminister Gerhard Karner. Zustände wie diese dürfen in der Europäischen Union keinen Platz haben. Jetzt ist entscheidend, dass Spanien seiner europäischen Verantwortung nachkommt und sicherstellt, dass kein einziger illegaler Migrant auf europäisches Festland gelangt. Gleichzeitig ist klar: Wer es mit den gemeinsamen europäischen Asyl- und Migrationsregeln ernst meint, darf nicht durch nationale Alleingänge das Gegenteil bewirken. Die Entscheidung der sozialdemokratischen spanischen Regierung, tausenden illegalen Migranten einen Aufenthaltstitel zu gewähren, hat sich als zusätzlicher Anreiz für illegale Migration erwiesen. Österreich hat sich mit Nachdruck für den Europäischen Asyl- und Migrationspakt eingesetzt, den wir schnellstmöglich in die Umsetzung bringen müssen, damit sich solche Situationen künftig nicht wiederholen. Sollte sich die Lage in Spanien so entwickeln, dass wir Druck auf unsere nationalen Grenzen spüren, werden wir alles unternehmen, um diese zu schützen – dazu gehören im Bedarfsfall auch temporäre Schließungen der Schengen-Grenzen. 🇦🇹 Honoured to open the new Austria House in Brussels today, alongside both our Prime Ministers. I cannot remember a time when Belgium and Austria worked together as closely as we do now. On Ukraine, on Europe’s security, on the future of our Union, we keep finding ourselves on the same page. @BMeinl, @ClaudiaBauer_at, so much of what our two countries achieve together begins with a simple chat between people who respect each other. That, in the end, is what makes diplomacy work. An Austria House in the heart of Europe is exactly that: a bridge between our two countries, and a place where Austria feels at home in Brussels. To our Austrian friends: the door of this house is open, and so is ours. Heute Abend beginnt der Europäische Rat #EUCO in Brüssel. Im Mittelpunkt stehen drei wesentliche Themen. Zum Ersten das EU-Budget: Nettozahler sind nicht der Bankomat der EU. Der neue Vorschlag ist für uns inakzeptabel. Eine Kürzung von gerade einmal 2% ist keine Einsparung, das ist reine Kosmetik. In einer Zeit, in der alle sparen müssen, wäre eine massive Budgeterhöhung das falsche Signal. Österreich wird auf Haushaltsdisziplin bestehen und auf die Beibehaltung des Beitragsrabatts. Das ist eine Frage der Gerechtigkeit. Zum Zweiten der Krieg in der Ukraine: Putin zeigt kein Interesse an Frieden. Der Druck auf Russland muss steigen. Österreich steht klar zur Ukraine, aber es darf auch für sie keine Abkürzung beim EU-Beitrittsprozess geben. Zum Dritten China: Europa hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren teilweise leichtgläubig in Abhängigkeiten begeben. Das hat die Pandemie schonungslos gezeigt. China ist Wettbewerber, systemischer Rivale — aber auch Partner. Wir sollten nicht naiv sein, Kooperationen dort schließen, wo sie möglich und sinnvoll sind unsere Partnerschaften in der Region ausbauen, etwa mit Indien oder Indonesien. (BK) © BKA/Dunker

Im Vorfeld des Europäischen Rates #EUCO habe ich heute mit der @FT gesprochen. Meine Position ist klar: Kriege enden nicht mit Waffen. Sie enden mit erfolgreicher Diplomatie. Und dafür braucht es offene Kanäle und die Bereitschaft auf beiden Seiten, ernsthaft miteinander zu sprechen. Brüssel hat in den vergangenen Wochen Kontakte zum Kreml hergestellt. Das unterstütze ich ausdrücklich, und ich werde mich beim Europäischen Rat dafür einsetzen, dass Europa diesen Weg gemeinsam geht. Unsere gemeinsame Haltung war und bleibt aufrecht: Wir unterstützen die Ukraine, damit dieser Krieg nicht endlos weitergeht. Unser Ziel ist ein gerechter und dauerhafter Frieden. Daran hat sich nichts geändert. Es gibt jetzt ein Momentum. Das müssen wir nutzen. Es liegt nicht an uns, den ersten Schritt muss Putin machen. I very much welcome the announcement of the agreement between the United States of America and Iran. I call on all parties to ensure the swift and full implementation of the memorandum, including the permanent opening of the Strait of Hormuz in order to guarantee freedom of navigation in accordance with international law. This agreement opens a window for negotiations towards a more stable and secure Middle East, and I urge all parties to engage constructively. This includes addressing Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. The stakes are high, not only for the region but for all of us. I would like to recognise the important role of Pakistan and the countries of the Gulf region, who have successfully mediated between the warring countries. (BK)

Excellent news: The Council has approved the start of talks on extending the 🇪🇺-roaming area to the Western Balkans. This has been a long-standing Austrian priority, and I am delighted that the discussions can finally begin.

Österreich wird 2027-2028 Verantwortung im UNO-Sicherheitsrat übernehmen. Diese Entscheidung hat die UNO-Generalversammlung in New York getroffen. In einer Welt zunehmender Konflikte und Polarisierung wird Österreich einen Beitrag zu Frieden und Sicherheit in der Welt leisten.
