My 7-year-old daughter heard me say that Dolly Parton died, and got visibly very sad. I was surprised she even knew that name. “You know Dolly Parton?” In the sweetest timid voice, she replied: “Well, I don’t _know_ know her. But she sent me books.” 🥹😢😭

Disability and homelessness often go hand in hand. Being sick is expensive. The “crip tax” is real. Benefits force you into legislated poverty and make you give up any savings or security. People don’t want to rent to the disabled. It’s suffering as a policy choice.

He wants flock cameras in every commissioner's office, every sheriff's office, in front of their homes, monitoring their cell phone activity, and on and on and on. It's wonderful!

They are lowering US flags to half-mast for a week, but if the government really wants to pay tribute to Dolly, they should fund education, the arts, and medical research instead of trying to eradicate them.

🚨BREAKING: A masked ICE agent was caught on a surveillance camera trespassing through private backyards, with his taser drawn, in Pompano Beach, Florida. In the video, the masked agent can be seen walking through private backyards, searching each property’s patio, with his taser drawn… before walking away. And we need to stop normalizing this. The Fourth Amendment protects people against unreasonable searches and seizures, and requires the government to have a warrant, consent, or a recognized exception before entering private property to conduct a search. Your backyard is still your private property. Your constitutional rights don’t disappear because the person walking onto your property is wearing a badge. And somehow, we’re being conditioned to see this as normal. IT IS NOT NORMAL. It should not be normal. Because if the government can just walk onto your private property, with weapons drawn, and expect you to accept it… we’re not talking about immigration enforcement anymore. We’re talking about a government that is no longer respecting the constitutional rights of the people it’s supposed to be protecting.

The Imagination Library sends a book to a kid every month from the time they’re born until they’re 5 years old. These messages are from the first and last books sent. It’s hard to overstate what Dolly Parton did to not only improve the lives and educations of so many kids, but the impact she had on southern Appalachia as a whole. The land once known for uneducated, backwards hillbillies would not be known as the forests of rolling wonder and communities built on kindness and folklore without her. My friend’s son was heartbroken today, thinking Dolly herself was sending his monthly books by hand, and she might as well have been. I’ve grown up, and my daughter will grow up, in a land made better because of her and there isn’t a way to say “thank you” enough for that. These mountains are something special, made by God, and worth remembering for every story in them and every story they inspire. Dolly never forgot that, and her legacy will be the same as the hills she came from.

She gave $500 to every student in her hometown who finished high school, she built hospitals and bald eagle preserves; her Imagination Library has gifted 300 million books to children. Roger Ebert once met her and came away thinking she was a literal angel. RIP.

Dolly Parton spent her life helping kids, marginalized communities and people in need, while entertaining millions. She never had to, she chose to. In a world full of wannabe Donald Trumps, choose to be a Dolly Parton.
