Throughout the 20th century, scientists believed that it was almost impossible to detect planets around other stars — their weak glow was completely drowned out by the radiance of their luminaries. However, this problem was solved. It turned out that there was no need to try to discern a weak source of radiation in the vicinity of a star, but only to monitor the drop in the brightness of the luminary caused by a microeclipse, the passage of a planet across its disk. To do this, it is only necessary to measure the fluctuations in the brightness of the star with high accuracy, and if it decreases for a certain time and with a certain periodicity, we can talk about the presence of a planet in the vicinity of the star. This method of detecting planets is called the transit method. During transit, the planet hides part of its parent star for the observer, so that the brightness of the star decreases during the transit. These changes can be noticed by continuous observation of the brightness of the star. The planet that causes the transit is called a transit planet. Planets revolve around their star in their orbit for a certain period of the orbit, so that after one orbit, another transit occurs. To rule out observing a random event, at least three transits must be observed within an equal time interval from each other. Although the probability of observing a transit in a randomly selected star is less than 1%, because the orbits can also be oriented in such a way that the planet never passes in front of its star. Based on the use of this method, the Kepler space telescope has harvested thousands of exoplanets. We currently know of more than 7 thousand planets and scientists continue to discover more.
