What began as a refuge for Ethiopians fleeing the Tigray conflict has become one of the few functioning healthcare lifelines in eastern Sudan. At Um Rakuba refugee camp, Gedaref State, the hospital now serves not only the camp’s majority of 17,000 Ethiopian refugees but also an estimated 100,000 people from surrounding Sudanese communities, according to Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). As international humanitarian funding shrinks and aid organisations scale back operations across Sudan, residents say the camp’s already limited services are steadily disappearing. According to MSF, fewer than ten humanitarian organisations now operate in and around Um Rakuba, down from around 35 at the height of the Ethiopian refugee response in 2021. #Sudan #KeepEyesOnSudan

🇸🇩 Sudan’s military launches renewed push in North Darfur as reinforcements arrive Sudan’s military and allied armed movements have begun a renewed offensive in North Darfur, moving reinforcements into the state and stepping up attacks on Rapid Support Forces positions near the Chad border, Mada Masr reported, citing three military-allied sources and a local activist. More than 300 vehicles carrying fighters crossed the desert this week, the first deployment of its kind since the RSF seized El Fasher in October, two senior sources said. The forces are being positioned to disrupt RSF supply lines from Libya and Chad. The push follows weeks of RSF operations across Ambro locality that have hit more than 50 towns and villages and displaced over 40,000 people, according to a local emergency committee member.

Update: New RSF APC convoy spotted in Nyala CIR identified a new convoy of at least 8 RSF APCs moving through Nyala, on 2 July, a further indicator of continued mobilisation in the area. The vehicles are in a near-black camouflage, a colour pattern not previously seen on this type of vehicle in Sudan, suggesting they are new arrivals. CIR geolocated the convoy to central Nyala [12.072825,24.899437] and the southern outskirts of Nyala [12.002168,24.838914]. CIR cannot confirm the intended destination of the forces. However, the presence of additional new vehicles further indicates that the RSF are continuing to mobilise for potential upcoming battles.

🇸🇩 Sudan Saudi Arabia funneled millions of dollars to two RSF commanders to defect to Sudan’s army, Africa Intelligence reported this week. The outlet named Maj. Gen. al-Nour Ahmed Adam, who it said received about $2.5 million to defect with fighters and equipment, and Ali Rizqallah, who allegedly switched sides in May for $800,000 to $2.5 million. The alleged payments point to outside powers shaping Sudan’s war: Saudi Arabia and Egypt back the army, while the UAE arms and funds the genocidal RSF. Rights groups warn defections do not erase responsibility for atrocities or war crimes.

#Update: Ethiopia and Somaliland Move Toward Deeper Maritime and Trade Cooperation. Ethiopia and Somaliland are likely to deepen economic and logistical cooperation around Berbera Port in the coming years, according to Ethiopian Business Review report, citing a new analysis by the Emirates Policy Center. The report says Ethiopia’s long-running effort to diversify sea access beyond Djibouti and Somaliland’s push to strengthen its role as a regional trade hub are driving a more pragmatic relationship centered on commerce, logistics, infrastructure and mutual cooperation.
