When I was 14, I worked at a grocery store and one day Stephen King came through my checkout line. I finally managed to tell him how much I loved his work and, in my thick German accent, nervously asked, “How do I become a writer as good as you?” He looked at me and said, “Stop worrying about how everyone else writes. Just write your story.” It was probably the best writing advice I’ve ever received. Fourteen years later, my wife and I almost ran him over because he was jaywalking. I guess the universe really wanted to complete the story. 😭
