📢📢 New Roundtable: The Ramadan War and the Changing World Order: Imperial Versus Sovereign Futures To make sense of this historical moment, @bikrumsinghgill and I co-edited a roundtable in @MidEastCritique arguing that the ongoing war against Iran cannot be reduced to another episode of US intervention in West Asia. Its stakes extend far beyond the region: what is being contested is the future political, legal, and economic architecture of world order itself. Much of the discussion in Western academia and media has focused on military exchanges, diplomacy, nuclear negotiations, or human rights. Our contributors ask a different set of questions: • Why is Iran central to US imperial strategy? • What does this war reveal about the crisis and transformation of US imperial power? • How is it reshaping regional and international order? Bringing together scholars from Iran and across the Global South, the roundtable foregrounds perspectives too often absent from dominant academic and policy debates. It does not mean you’re required to reach a certain conclusion; simply acknowledge that there were legitimate questions— ones that were brought forth by the rank-and-file of the Bolivarian Revolution and deemed worthy of debate and interrogation by most communist parties across Latin America. That is a basic principle of dialectics and scientific socialism that the majority of public-facing analysts and journalists betrayed for the past few months. There is a viable method to fiercely combat US propaganda, acknowledge the hostage situation Delcy’s administration is in, defend the interests of the rank and file proletarian of the Bolivarian Revolution, and maintain a true fidelity to scientific socialism— all at the same time. It is our responsibility to practice that. The signs were there far before the joint U.S.-Venezuelan operation to detain and deport Saab. Even prior to the inhumane kidnapping of President Maduro, Delcy was behind many of the neoliberal reforms and privatization of economic sectors that contradicted the original labor politics of the Bolivarian Revolution. In a true democratic and dialectical process, these matters were heavily debated across Venezuela’s internal forums. I think it’s incorrect and defeatist to claim the “Bolivarian Revolution is dead”. There are several Venezuelan rank-and-file organizations and formal institutions who are mobilizing to maintain and advance Chavez’ vision. In order to effectively do so, we must engage in principled criticism and action-oriented solidarity— not just words of solidarity, not just voluntourism trips— actual historically effective strategic and revolutionary direct-action. Any revolution which does not fulfill its tasks ultimately paves the way for counterrevolution and its own destruction.
