Recently I interviewed a Senior Engineer. Strong candidate. Kafka? ✅ Redis? ✅ Microservices? ✅ Distributed systems? ✅ Then I asked: "Your payment service receives 100,000 payment requests per minute." A customer clicks Pay. The request reaches your payment service. Payment succeeds. But before your service sends the response, the network connection drops. The customer sees: "Payment failed." They click Pay again. Now you have two requests for the same order. Both can reach different servers. Both can be processed concurrently. How do you guarantee the customer is charged exactly once? "Just use a database transaction." Doesn't solve it. "Use Redis." Still doesn't solve the distributed failure scenario. "Check the order status first." What happens when two requests check it at exactly the same time? Your turn: How would you design this payment API so retries don't create duplicate charges? There's a specific distributed-systems concept behind this. And you'll encounter it everywhere payments are involved.👇

A lot of people are wondering why Stripe is acquiring OpenRouter when both companies look completely different. Well, Stripe is making the right use of their money. Stripe realized that building an LLM would cost a hell of a lot of money. So why not avoid the cost of building an LLM and focus more on owning the infrastructure layer around AI applications? I don't see a single application on the internet in the next 5 years that won't be making an API call to an LLM provider. Now think about it: an application making AI API calls via OpenRouter, with payment infrastructure built on Stripe. That means Stripe can own the internet in the next 5 years.

Maybe bat 50 overs for 200 today and set around 380-400. But that will have to be flexible depending on the weather.

Adventure has lots of unknowns. Embrace them, they’re a big part of the adventure.

Pretty good way to think about the value of AI agents and where the opportunity lies. You have a technology that will tirelessly do all the things that you could never fully do before. Not because you didn’t want to or it wasn’t valuable, but because it was just not even remotely practical. The upside with AI is to think about everything you can now throw intelligence at that won’t give up and what would the returns be. You just couldn’t possibly find every security vulnerability in your codebase, because you couldn’t simulate every risk vector. You couldn’t read every contract or document to process the data and capture it to query later. You couldn’t comb through your customer base and look for every relevant data point for doing upsells. And so on. This is a pretty clear way to think about how to deploy AI to get real gains, but also where the startup opportunities are as well. Go after the markets where more compute on a problem will qualitatively change what customers can now do in that domain.
