Almost everybody has heard the last five minutes of Kevin Cosgrove's life. Hardly anyone knows a single thing about the other 46 years. So here he is. He was born in New York in 1955, one of seven kids in a big Long Island family. He met a waitress named Wendy and married her in 1980. She became a schoolteacher. They settled in West Islip and had three children, Brian, Claire, and Elizabeth, who on September 11, 2001 were 12, 9, and 4 years old. He was the guy on the block who shoveled the walks of the elderly widows in winter without being asked, and carried packages for old couples the rest of the year. That is not a eulogy flourish, it is what his neighbors actually said about him. At home he was the soft one. He let the kids eat dinner backward, dessert first, which his wife pointed out made her look like the strict parent by default. His youngest, Elizabeth, who was four, remembered him as a good snuggler. That is the memory a four-year-old gets to keep. He worked as a vice president of claims at Aon, on the 105th floor of the South Tower. He was also his company's fire warden, which meant that in an emergency his assigned job was to get other people out of the building. When the North Tower was hit at 8:46 he called Wendy to tell her he was fine and that he was getting out. At 9:03 Flight 175 hit his building. At 9:54 he got through to a 911 dispatcher from a colleague's office, with two other men next to him, Doug Cherry and John Ostaru. He gave his name. He gave his floor. He told them how many people were with him and what the conditions were, calmly, the way a fire warden is trained to. He asked them to send someone. He told them he had young children. And he said the line that has followed him for a quarter century. "We're young men. We're not ready to die." The tower came down at 9:59, five minutes into the call. I am not going to transcribe the end of it. Anyone who has heard it does not need me to, and his family has had to live with the fact that the worst moment of their father's life is a clip that strangers pass around for shock value. The recording is public at all because federal prosecutors entered it as evidence in the trial of Zacarias Moussaoui in 2006, and Wendy Cosgrove took the stand in that trial and testified about what her husband's last minutes did to her children. His remains were recovered, which is more than most of the families got. If you have listened to that call, and most people have, you owe him the rest of it. He was a big Irish kid from Long Island who married a waitress, raised three children, gave them dessert first, cleared his neighbors' sidewalks, and was standing on the 105th floor that morning partly because getting other people out was literally his job. His name was Kevin Cosgrove and he was a lot more than five minutes of audio.

Twenty-five years ago, a fire chief climbed to the 78th floor of the South Tower, looked at the impact zone, and calmly radioed that he thought he could put it out. His name was Orio Palmer. He was 45 years old and he was the battalion chief of Battalion 7. You can still hear him. The tape exists. Understand the problem he was handed that morning. The fire was 78 floors up. The stairs were full of thousands of people coming down. The elevators in a high-rise fire are the one thing you are never supposed to use, and most of them in that building were destroyed or stranded anyway. Palmer was the wrong man to tell that to. He was a fanatic about the job in a way that borders on obsessive. He ran marathons. He was in the kind of physical condition that made other firefighters uncomfortable, and the FDNY later named its fitness test after him. He had also spent years studying the World Trade Center's elevator systems, going back to the 1993 bombing, until he understood the machinery well enough to work it himself. So on September 11 he found a freight elevator that everyone else had written off, got it running, and rode it to the 41st floor with members of Ladder 15. Then he climbed the other 37 floors on foot in roughly 50 pounds of gear. Next to him the whole way was Ronnie Bucca, 47, a fire marshal, who came up all 78 floors on his stairs. Bucca was a former Green Beret from the Vietnam era who later worked as an analyst for the Defense Intelligence Agency and served as the fire department's representative to the Joint Terrorism Task Force until 2000. He had investigated the 1993 bombing of that same building. He is the only fire marshal in the history of the FDNY killed in the line of duty. Two marathon runners, one of them a Green Beret, went higher into those towers than any other first responders on either side of the site. When Palmer got to the 78th floor sky lobby he keyed his radio and reported what he was looking at. Numerous 10-45 Code Ones, which is the fire department's code for confirmed dead. That floor had been full of people waiting for elevators when Flight 175 came through it. Then he said this. "Battalion Seven, Ladder 15, we've got two isolated pockets of fire. We should be able to knock it down with two lines." Read that again. He is standing in the middle of the impact zone of a hijacked airliner, 1,000 feet in the air, surrounded by the dead, and his professional assessment is that two hose lines will handle it. He was not wrong about the fire. Nobody in that building knew the steel above him was already failing. His last actions were working to free civilians trapped in an elevator on that floor. The South Tower came down at 9:59. The recordings of his transmissions only exist publicly because the New York Times and the families of firefighters had to sue for their release. The transcripts came out in 2002 and the audio in 2005. They are the reason we know how far up the fire department actually got, and they are the reason nobody can ever say it was hopeless from the start, because Orio Palmer made it to the fire and he was getting ready to fight it.

The OSS knew all of this and protected these monsters to use in future operations against their current ally: the USSR. They and the CIA resettled these monsters in the US and all over Europe. They protected them. They used them in Operation Gladio activities and as trainers for Gladio operators including Otto Skorzeny who trained the Ukrainian stay behind units during the war and his boss Reinhard Gehlen. My big spider plant has had multiple issues. It fell over, had some sort of plant illness and then got smashed when moving it so I couldn’t save it. It was abused in this house lol!
