Was searching for a new phone and it struck me, India still doesn’t have a truly homegrown phone brand that designs and manufactures end-to-end in India. World’s 2nd-largest phone market, worth over ₹3 lakh crore a year, yet, 75% of our market is ruled by Chinese brands, 15–17% by Korea, 3–4% by US and only 1–4% is by Indian brands, mostly in the budget segment. I’m not a tech expert, so I may not know all the complexities, but it still makes me wonder, what are the roadblocks stopping India from building a strong homegrown smartphone ecosystem?
