Here on Little Bay Islands, the wind has a long, lonely sound as it comes across the water. It speaks of the coming cold, and of all the time that has passed over these rocks, all the winters endured. Tomorrow, that endless sound will fall away. A great silence will settle over this place, and over the whole of the country. A silence for Remembrance Day. I walk these hills and shores in a freedom that is almost absolute. A profound and quiet peace. And in that quiet, I often find myself standing by the graves, my hand resting on the cold stone, reading the names from the photograph. They are not just names. They are the sons of this very rock and sea. They were men who knew the bite of the salt spray and the bend of the oar. Men who left this hard, beautiful life for a world of guns and barbed wire and mud, and many, who never returned to the coves that had shaped them. We, in our time, are gifted with so much. We live in a nation, in Canada, that is defined by its peace. We have the profound privilege to live our lives as we see fit. To raise our children in safety, to speak our minds without fear, to build a future, to simply... be. We take this for granted, this ordinary, extraordinary peace. We assume it as our right, as natural as the tide. But this peace is not natural. It is a built thing. It is a legacy. It was not given freely. It was bought. It was bought by the men whose names are on these stones. It was purchased with their futures, with the lives they would never live, the children they would never hold, the old age they would never see. And that cost was not paid just once, in a foreign field. It was paid here, in the quiet outports, over and over, in the long, hard years that followed. It echoed in the homes that were suddenly too large, too empty. It was paid by the women who watched the harbour, their eyes scanning the horizon for a ship that would never bring their husbands or sons home. It was paid by the children who would know their fathers only as a story, a faded photograph, a name on a headstone. Sometimes, a single loss was enough to break the heart of a whole community. Enough to unravel the very future it was building. Just a few miles from here, in Green Bay, the community of Three Arms once bustled with life. One hundred and forty souls. Its heart was the merchant, James Norris. He owned the store, the cannery, the schooners that fished the grounds. He was the employer, the engine of the town. His son, Stephen, was his pride, the one who would take it all on, the heir to all his hard work. But the war called, and Stephen went. He was killed in 1916. For James, the world ended. The son he had built it all for was gone. And suddenly, the very town he had made, the sounds of the mill, the smell of the salt fish, the sight of his own boats, all of it was a torment. Every part of his life's work was a reminder of the boy who would never come back. The future was a void. He could not stay. A man cannot look at the reminders of a broken heart, day after day. He began to close his life's work, one piece at a time. The businesses shut down. The work vanished. The Norris family left, and with them, the lifeblood of Three Arms drained away. The community faded, became a ghost, and was finally, completely abandoned. An entire town, emptied by a father's grief. That is the price of our peace. That is the cost of the privilege we hold. It is the young man who falls. It is the father who is hollowed out by loss. It is the community that withers and dies, its foundations reclaimed by the spruce and the wind. When I stand here in the profound stillness of Little Bay Islands, I feel that cost in the cold air. The freedom I cherish, the peace we all share as Canadians, is heavy. It is heavy with the lives that were given for it, and the lives that were shattered in its making. Tomorrow, in the silence, I will hold them all. I will be grateful. And I will remember them.

There are four @WCKitchen warehouses in Jordan filled with food for the people of Gaza….rice, oil, flour, vegetables…over 100 trucks loaded and ready to arrive to the border crossing in less than an hour. We have hundreds more trucks ready to bring cooking supplies and more food, but still the government of Israel is not permitting us to enter with aid. We have been cooking and feeding in Gaza at a huge scale for more than 19 months. More than 130 million meals! For months, Israel has not allowed any aid to enter…we have been forced to shut down of our community kitchens and bakeries. We have no food left…but we are ready at any moment to start cooking again. Many innocent families are desperate to eat. Let us feed the people of Gaza!

The Stellar Eagle normally inhabits Russia, Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. The fact that it has been living on the Bonavista Peninsula for a 3rd straight year, is mind boggling. It made an appearance for us this morning. #wildlife #stellareagle #birdphotography
