You inevitably absorb that idea from the cultural atmosphere, especially if you didn’t live through it so you have no memories of your own to compare it to. But then you look into it and you see that everything they’ve told you about it is a lie. The story is entirely different from what you were told. Real History exists to expose these kinds of lies.
