Dame Penelope Keith has sadly passed away. This stairway sketch from the 1977 Morecambe & Wise Christmas Special is still one of the funniest things ever shown on TV. You can see all three trying (and failing) to keep it together. An absolute classic.

A UK family where both parents work full-time, pay full council tax, and earn enough to be 'doing alright' on paper, can't afford to take their kids to the Tower of London on a Saturday in 2026. Two adult tickets and two child tickets at standard price comes to roughly £100. Add £40-£80 in train fares and £50-£70 for lunch — that's around £200 for a single Saturday at one tourist attraction in their own capital city. A family on full Universal Credit, living in subsidised housing, paying no council tax, can take the same four people to the same Tower for £1 a ticket — £4 total — under the 'inclusive access' schemes most major UK attractions now run. The working family pays the full £200 day out AND covers — through their taxes — the £196 discount the benefits family gets on the same trip. Whatever the original intention of those schemes, this is the structure most UK working families are now living inside. Pay the full bill, then watch the people next door enjoy the day out you can't take your own kids to.

Been living on salads this past week. Every time I make a potato salad it's better than the last one, but this one rocks. 2 small bags of Jersey Royals from Lidl, cooked til a fork will sink in easily, but not too soft. Dressing (maybe I shouldn't tell you and just bottle it and sell it?) OK 3 tbsp shop bought mayo (the Polish one from Lidl is my fave) 1.5 tbsp 10% Greek Yoghurt 2 good sized spring onions, chopped 1 tsp Dijon mustard Salt and plenty of black pepper. Job's a good'un!
I went to the chemist today. It was empty, so while buying a reed diffuser I said how the scent reminded me of the woodlands near where I grew up, and how it was nice to bring a little of that into such a grey town. They just stood there looking baffled. And I thought: conversation has gone, hasn’t it? Not completely, perhaps. Maybe people are just out of practice. Everything is so transactional now. Tap the card. Take the receipt. Next. But sometimes you offer a small human moment, that's important, a memory, a feeling, a bit of colour in the day and it landed like I’ve done something odd. I don’t think it is odd. A smell reminding you of trees, bluebells, childhood, walking the dog, somewhere greener and softer than where you are now, that’s being alive to things. Trying to make a small connection should not feel embarrassing. It’s called being alive. Society is hard enough. I'm not changing.
