Only sharing this story so people don’t make the same mistakes! A few years back I did a co pub deal with S**y.. I signed because the A&R was someone I knew and trusted and worked on so many records and was someone who understood my vision. LITERALLY the same month I was signed by him. S— fired him completely. Mind u I had countless records I wanted to get my money for before the period ends where u can’t collect on it anymore. A year of reaching out went by and then another. I was busy touring so I didn’t think much of it you know. After 2 years my team hits them up aggressively like hey what is going on how far along are we to finishing this deal and they send over the numbers and they are completely off. Turns out since they fired my A&R none of the back catalog work was collected and I lost hundreds of thousands if not maybe a few million. Finally the VP Reached out for a call and All I was told was I’m sorry that we messed up let me introduce u to our LATIN department in Miami and we can try and get u some placements there. (I MAKE HIP-HOP music) I honestly never expect someone to say some racist shit like that to me. But I never hung up on someone so fast in my life. Maybe a few months later I got the money together to buy myself out of the deal which cost me A LOT of money. Moral of the story is be careful who you work with and if an A&R signs u and believes in you and u have a good relationship make it so if they get fired YOU LEAVE with them. Tough lesson but atleast I went through it so you don’t.
