Bo Jackson had his hip replaced. Then he came back and hit a home run on the first swing he took. Doctors had told him he might not walk normally again. Nobody in the history of Major League Baseball had ever played a game with an artificial hip. Start with what he was before, because it's the most absurd résumé in American sports. Heisman Trophy winner at Auburn in 1985. Then he played BOTH pro sports at once. All Star in Major League Baseball and Pro Bowler in the NFL, the only person ever to do both. The 1989 All Star Game, he made a running catch to save runs, then led off the bottom of the first with a 448 foot home run off Rick Reuschel. Vin Scully on the call: "Look at that one! Bo Jackson says hello!" He once hit three home runs in his first three at bats at Yankee Stadium. He once had time denied by the umpire, got back in the box with one hand still on the bat, and homered on the next pitch anyway. Then January 1991. A playoff game with the Raiders. A routine tackle from behind dislocated his hip. The damage cut off blood supply to the joint. Avascular necrosis. The bone in his hip began to die. His football career ended that day. He never played another down. The Royals released him. Doctors told him what the rest of his life would look like. In April 1992 he had a total hip replacement. He missed the entire 1992 season. And then, exactly one year and four days after surgeons put an artificial joint in his body, he was sitting in the White Sox dugout on Opening Day 1993 at Comiskey Park. 42,775 people in the building against the Yankees. Sixth inning. Lefty Neal Heaton comes in. Manager Gene Lamont had told Bo earlier that if Heaton pitched, Bo was hitting. He walked to the plate for the first time in 18 months. First pitch, strike. Second pitch, he put it into the right field bleachers, over the 347 mark. The building lost its mind. He circled the bases on an artificial hip to a standing ovation from a sellout crowd. Nike's full page ad in USA Today the next morning was two words. "Bo Knew." That season he played 85 games and hit 16 home runs. He was named American League Comeback Player of the Year. In September he hit a three run homer that helped clinch the division for Chicago. He retired after the strike shortened 1994 season, hitting .279 with 13 home runs for the Angels before it ended. When he walked away, doctors said he had already put 20 to 25 years of wear and tear on a hip joint that was three years old. He was 32. Nobody will ever know what Bo Jackson would have been. That's the whole tragedy and the whole legend. But on April 9, 1993, a man who had been told to be grateful he could walk stepped into a big league batter's box and hit the second pitch he saw into the seats.
