Seems people wanted MJ to stay making the same kind of music for the rest of his life. They wanted him to stay with Quincy.
The problem with people dickriding Michael Jackson’s run in the 90s is that it comes with the cost of them undervaluing the people who created the trends that Michael Jackson was chasing. I don’t see anybody who dickrides the dangerous album talking about the first Guy or Keith Sweat album which set the standard that Michael Jackson was chasing on Dangerous. They act like Michael Jackson was the poster boy for New Jack Swing on some gentrified shit.
MJ’s music in the 90s will always be an interesting topic. As great as he was, he did struggle musically during that decade like pretty much everybody that debuted in the 60s, 70s & even 80s because the sound changed so drastically. He still put out some great work in the 90s but
Dangerous should’ve been produced entirely by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. They were the perfect balance between a more traditionally “white” pop sound and a distinctly “black” R&B sound Instead, the album ended up with Teddy Riley’s production being toned down and polished by Michael Jackson’s creative input which weakened the production. “Remember the Time” is probably the least compromised example of Teddy’s signature sound which is why it’s the best one of them all on the album The second half of the album stinks because watered-down pop tracks that retread ideas Michael had already explored on Bad. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis would have created superior versions of all those songs (Teddy Riley wouldn’t have been able to do this) The second disc of the HIStory album has this same issue. Reheating old nachos. That album honestly should have never came out Invincible should have been fully produced by The Neptunes. It would have sounded like 8701 by Usher which was a far superior album
