During WWII, in 1944 the U.S. Army built one of the largest-calibre guns ever produced, a 36-inch (914 mm) mortar they nicknamed Little David, having a larger calibre than both of Germany's Schwerer Gustav and Dora which were 31.5-inch (800 mm) railway guns. It fired a 3,650 lb (1,660 kg) shell at 1,250 feet per second (381 m/s) out to 9,500 yards(8.7 km). The complete weapon weighed 173,000 pounds and traveled in two loads—an 80,000 lb (36,000 kg) barrel and a 93,000 lb (42,000 kg) base—hauled by heavy tractors and ready to fire in about twelve hours. Meant first for the Siegfried Line and later for Japanese fortifications, it never fired a shot in combat.🫡
