Two-level spondylolisthesis at 56. Built my own back program. At 60, fastest 50+ 5K of the whole summer Cougar Mountain series. Not medical advice 🏔️sixtyplusstrong.com Seattle, WA areaJoined April 2026
Mercer Island, end of the run, camera still on. So beautiful this park. Water views as you run, forest trails, and it ends on a pier. Which park near you ends at the water? #SixtyPlusStrong#TrailRunning
Sciatica. I know that pain. Mine stopped about a year ago. Since I've got my program to where it is today, I haven't had sciatica return. Running 3 days a week, core work 3 days. Not a doctor, just my own case. #SixtyPlusStrong#Sciatica
First run after a sprained ankle. A month off, then the full 5k with no pain in the ankle. Stopped at the lake after for a little meditation, with a heron for company. Only 5 weeks left to train for my next race at Cougar Mountain. #SixtyPlusStrong#RunningOver60
One legged hip thrusts, 3 sets of 10 per side. Knee pain my whole life, even surgery at one point. The move builds the glutes, and for me strong glutes improve the knee pain. Not a doctor, just what I noticed. #SixtyPlusStrong#KneePain
Hong Kong, August last year. Woke up downtown, went looking for a run, found Victoria Harbour. There's no week where the running doesn't happen. The fun part is finding out where. #SixtyPlusStrong#HongKong
Not a doctor, not medical advice. Collagen, 6 g every morning. youtheory. Bryan Johnson's protocol has 11 g a day. That's where I first paid attention. I take 6. Anybody else on collagen? What number did you land on? #SixtyPlusStrong
Thirty push-ups in a row, once a session. The boring metric. Can't be faked. Either you do thirty in a row or you don't. No gym, a mat on the deck, three times a week at 60. What's your can't-fake-it test? #SixtyPlusStrong
Not a doctor, not medical advice. Vitamin D3, 5,000 units every morning. Got it from the Huberman Lab podcast. He takes 5,000 a day himself. Around Seattle there isn't much sun October through March. Do you take anything through the winter? #SixtyPlusStrong
Quad stretch, hand on a post. I don't just stand there and hold it. I rotate the hip while I'm in it and the hip gets a stretch too. One stretch, two jobs.
Do you rotate on yours?
Brand new shoes. First time out the door. The phone rang and I rolled my ankle on my own front steps. Weeks after racing down Cougar Mountain.
Fifteen days on, still swollen. The autumn race is end of October and I don't know yet.
What's the dumbest way you've hurt yourself?
Hamstring stretch. People lift the leg way up high. Mine goes on a curb at ankle height. It's all about the pelvis, not the height.
How high do you put your leg?
At 56 I couldn't do a single dead bug. My spine buckled when I tried it. The key thing is keeping your spine neutral, and every exercise I've posted since came after this one.
What was your first move back?
Fifty jumps on the rope, then I stretch. Not the other way round. I heard somewhere stretches work better once you're warm, so that's the order I use at 60.
What order do you do yours in?
Not a doctor, not medical advice. Creatine monohydrate, 2.25 g every morning. NOW Sports, pill form. Most people say five grams. Mine is 2.25. Heard it enough times on the Huberman Lab podcast that I tried it. What's on your counter in the morning? #SixtyPlusStrong
In 2022 I couldn't do a deadbug. Now it's four sets of twenty hanging knees to elbows. Four years of rebuilding my back in between.
Hands in the straps, hang first, then the knees come up. No gym.
I'm 60. Not medical advice.
Berthusen Memorial Park, Whatcom County. Forest trails, river peekaboos. I said "beautiful" four times in my post-run review and I'm not taking any of them back. #SixtyPlusStrong
Back extensions made my back worse. So I switched.
One minute when I started. 160 seconds now.
Reverse plank. Same muscles, without the aggressive lower back movement.
I'm 60, rebuilding my back. Not medical advice.
What's the exercise you had to give up on?
Work trip to the south Bay. Skipped lunch to get out to Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge in Alviso. Levee trails dead straight between the salt ponds, hills across the water. 5.5 miles in the hottest part of the day, two days out from race four. I run everywhere I go.
Side plank with motion. Fifty reps a side, three days a week. The fist comes in under the ribs and back out.
Skip them and I tend to get a bit of pain. Do them and it disappears.
A mat and a floor. No gym. I'm 60. Not medical advice.
Same course three times this summer. 29:17. Then 31:05, raced sick. Then 28:53, my best of the series, first in my age group at 60, and the fastest 50-and-over time of all three races. The plan never changed. Next up is the fall Cougar run. #SixtyPlusStrong
