Relations with Britain were controversial bc Britain represented a financial/manufacturing model (increasingly opposed to slavery) that the Federalists wanted to adopt domestically.

@ettingermentum I think you're unhelpfully conflating "moderate" and "establishment." Establishment pols don't do especially well winning elections, but moderate ones sure seem to. The real trick is finding moderate outsiders.
