On October 16, the National Assembly of Korea expelled members of the press, who serve as guardians of the public’s right to know from the Committee on Science, ICT, Broadcasting, and Communications. Believing they could conceal their faults by silencing the eyes, ears, and voice of the media, lawmakers pushed the press out without hesitation. Senior executives at certain media outlets, upon hearing the news, merely laughed and remarked, "If they tell us to leave, we should leave. You’ve had a hard time because of the opposition anyway." They showed neither outrage nor courage to speak out against the ruling party that had expelled the press. Both the National Assembly and some media executives seem convinced that they alone can restore order to this chaos.

Ashamed In the dark days when journalists faced arrest, torture, and death, many at The Dong-A Ilbo stood firm. On April 15, 1971, they issued the “Declaration for the Defense of Press Freedom,” rejecting government interference and agents in the newsroom. On October 24, 1974, 180 reporters reaffirmed this with the “Declaration for the Practice of Free Press,” emphasizing no external meddling, no agent access, and no illegal arrests. This resolve spread to The Hankook Ilbo, The Chosun Ilbo, and beyond, shaping Korean journalism.Despite oppression firings at Dong-A Ilbo and Broadcasting (1974-75), the Chosun Free Press Defense Committee (1975), and the 1980 media consolidation, journalists held fast to truth.This is no political statement, but a confession: I am ashamed compared to those days. Senior reporters, despite personal risks, declared, “Facts are sacred. Do not violate press freedom.” Journalism was their sacred duty to inform, correct wrongs, and share stories of humanity, not just a job. Today, S.Korea faces crises: soaring exchange rates, a sealed customs system, and a two-week-unresolved fire at the National Information Resources Service. The military reports 17 injuries in a day, vacant command posts, and unchecked illegal Chinese structures in the West Sea. Disgracefully, a Vice Minister diminished veterans’ sacrifices, while the legal system crumbled prosecution dismantled, a township chief and an official dead by suicide, and 330 Koreans kidnapped in Cambodia.The press must feel this shame. Instead of relying on government handouts, we must ask: Was there coercion? Is there a rescue plan? How will the NIRS fire be resolved? 부끄럽다 집으로 퇴근하던 기자를 잡아가 고문하고 죽이던 시절에도, 살아 숨 쉬는 기자는 있었다. 1971년 4월 15일, 동아일보 기자들은 ‘언론자유수호선언’을 통해 외부의 간섭을 배격하고, 기관 요원의 상주를 거부했다. 이어 1974년 10월 24일, 동아일보 편집국 기자 약 180명은 ‘자유언론실천선언’을 발표하며 외부 간섭 배제, 기관원 출입 거부, 불법 연행 거부의 3대 원칙을 다시 천명했다. 이 선언은 한국일보, 조선일보 등으로 확산되며 한국 언론사에 굵은 획을 그었다. 그 뒤로도 언론은 수많은 시련을 겪었다. 1974년 12월부터 1975년 3월까지 이어진 동아일보·동아방송 취재 인력 해직 사태, 1975년 3월 21일 조선자유언론수호투쟁위원회(조선일보) 결성, 1980년 신군부의 언론 통폐합 등 숱한 탄압 속에서도 기자들은 진실을 향한 펜을 꺾지 않았다. 이 글은 정치적 주장을 담기 위한 것이 아니다. 다만, 그 시절에 비해 지금의 내가 부끄럽다는 사실을 고백하기 위함이다. 사람이 죽어나가던 그 시절에도 수많은 선배 기자들은 외쳤다. “아닌 것은 아닌 것이다. 팩트는 신성하다. 언론의 자유를 침해하지 마라.” 그들이 대출금이 없어서, 가족이 없어서 그렇게 한 것이 아니었다. 언론은 생계의 수단이 아니라, 국민에게 사실을 전하고, 잘못된 것을 바로잡으며, 따뜻한 이야기를 구석구석 전하는 사명임을 알았기 때문이다. 그래서 그들은 당장의 생계와 이익 앞에서도 굴하지 않았다. 작금의 대한민국은 어떤가. 환율은 비상계엄도 아닌데 폭등하고, 관세 행정은 판도라의 상자처럼 열리지 않는다. 국가정보자원관리원(국정자원)이 불타오른 지 2주가 다 되어가지만, 주요 전산망과 데이터는 여전히 복구 기미가 없다. ‘누가, 언제, 어디서, 무엇을, 어떻게, 왜’라는 기본조차 밝히지 못하는 당국의 모습이 이어지고 있다. 군에서는 단 하루에 17명의 부상자가 발생했고, 인천에서는 수백 발의 탄피가 발견됐다. 주요 지휘관 자리는 여전히 공석이고, 국방장관의 ‘안전 점검’은 이미 대답 없는 메아리가 된 지 오래다. 서해에는 중국의 불법 구조물이 버젓이 들어서 있고, 중국인들은 무비자로 밀려들고 있다. 국방에 있어 참담함은 비단 현직 군인에서 끝나지 않는다. 강윤진 국가보훈부 차관은 제1연평해전 참전용사들이 함께한 자리에서 이렇게 말했다. “8명 중 4명이 국가유공자가 됐으면 많이 된 거 아니에요?” 이어 “6·25 참전유공자들은 다 국가유공자로 인정해야겠네”라고 덧붙였다. 참담하다. 미국은 군견이나 경찰견처럼 복무(serve)한 동물에게도 경의를 표한다. 그들은 ‘복역(served time)’이 아니라 ‘복무(served the country)’라고 말한다. 그렇다면 한국의 참전용사는 무엇인가. 각자 알아서 생각하길 바란다. 이렇게 기본적인 존중조차 논쟁의 대상이 되는 나라, 그 기본부터 다시 물어야 하는 현실이 개탄스럽다. 아울러 법체계도 사지가 찢겼다. 검찰은 해체됐고, 수사기관의 중심은 사라졌다. ‘○○위원회’라는 이름만 무수히 생겨날 예정이다. 책임은 희미해졌고 어제까지 국무위원이던 사람은 면직되자마자 집 앞에서 수갑에 두 손이 묶였다. 하지만 무소불위의 특검 조사를 받던 한 면장은 스스로 생을 마감했고, 국정자원 화재 대응을 맡았던 행정안전부 서기관은 세종청사에서 안타까운 선택을 했다. 누군가 식탁 위에서 맛있는 음식을 즐기는 동안, 캄보디아에서는 330명의 우리 국민이 납치·실종되고 고문당하고 죽어가고 있다. 2030 세대에게는 아이를 낳으라 한다. 그러나 서울의 출산율은 0.56명이다. 그저 “낳아라”는 구호로 가스라이팅할 게 아니라, 살아 숨 쉬는 국민을 지키는 일부터 보여야 한다. 대법원장을 국정감사 증인석에 세우겠다고 윽박지르기 전에, 배임죄 폐지와 특혜 인선을 논하기 전에, 먼저 캄보디아에 있는 330명 자국민의 생사부터 확인하라고 권고해야 한다. 그리고 우리 언론도 부끄러움을 알아야 한다. 당국이 주는 보도자료와 소스에 취해 살며, 무의미한 받글(받은 글)을 공유하기 전에, 수사기관의 강압은 없었는지, 납치된 국민의 구출 대책은 있는지, 국가 전산망 화재는 어떻게 마무리할 것인지, 살아있는 질문을 던지는 기자가 단 한 명이라도 더 나타나길 바란다. 우리는 기자다. 팩트가 신성하다는 믿음을 품고 사는, 사명을 가진 사람들이다. 부디 함께 부끄러움을 알고, 후안무치한 자가 되지 말자. #대한민국 #한국 #언론 #자유 #죽음 #현실 #법치 #헌법

A senior official at Korea’s Ministry of the Interior and Safety, who was leading recovery efforts after the Sept. 26 fire at the National Information Resources Service (NIRS) data center, has died in an apparent suicide at the Sejong Government Complex. The fire destroyed 380+ lithium-ion batteries and servers, disrupting 647 government systems, including key administrative and civil services.
