2020. CBS NY reports on Turkish anchor baby ring busted operating in Long Island, NY — not only did their babies get US citizenship, they were getting taxpayer funded healthcare in the process. These are the type of insane birth tourism schemes that are incentivized by birthright citizenship, and have to be stamped out: "Prosecutors say more than 100 pregnant women from Turkey came here to give birth, so their children were instantly granted US citizenship." "Investigators say the women then used benefits like Medicaid." "The defendants fraudulently facilitated the births in the United States of approximately 119 Turkish children. And those children now hold birthright US citizenship." "Alleged lies to obtain travel visas. Fraudulent Medicaid claims for babies and moms who stayed at seven birth houses across Suffolk County." "Women paid up to $10,000 each for accommodations and free health care paid by U.S. taxpayers." "Six people arrested, charged with money laundering and $2 million in Medicaid fraud." "The mothers who participated were not charged. Investigators say many of them have returned to Turkey with their babies, who will remain U.S. citizens."

@christopherrufo No, I don't think we are responsible for all poor nations. But we were saving 1 life every 10 seconds with USAID, and we cut that off abruptly with no time for countries to adjust. So kids died unnecessarily. And I do think that it's bad when kids die unnecessarily, don't you?

A few months ago, the New York Times wrote a story about a pregnant Honduran woman who was deported from the country and then traveled 1,700 miles to commit felony re-entry so her child could be born in America. The Supreme Court just ruled that her baby is as much of a citizen as you and I.

Now that the Supreme Court has given its blessing to birth tourism, it's probably worth revisiting this story from 2019. A Chinese national named Dongyuan Li ran a company called You Win USA Vacation Services that helped pregnant Chinese women travel to the U.S. to give birth so their children would get citizenship. She advertised having served more than 500 customers, charged each between $40,000 and $80,000, used 20 apartments in Irvine to house the mothers, and took in $3 million in wire transfers from China in two years. Customers were coached to lie on their visa applications and at the U.S. consulate interview in China, claiming they'd stay only two weeks when they actually planned to stay up to three months to give birth. They were told to come early in pregnancy and were coached on how to conceal their pregnancies from customs. You Win's marketing pitch was that giving birth in the U.S. meant "13 years of free education," "less pollution," "an easier way for the whole family to immigrate to the United States," and "priority for jobs in U.S. government, public companies, and large corporations." What could possibly go wrong by constitutionalizing the incentive driving these schemes?

Birthright citizenship tale... Our social circle in Maskachusetts included a guy married to a Honduran. Every time one of his wife's relatives is pregnant she comes to stay with them. When it is time to deliver the baby, the relative Ubers to one of the most expensive hospitals in the world, e.g., Beth Israel. She gives birth, says the magic words to avoid ever receiving a bill ("I'm undocumented"), and, after a few weeks, heads back to Honduras with baby, birth certificate, and U.S. passport. This one family has likely cost taxpayers at least $300,000 in payments to the hospital for "uncompensated care" and more than 10 U.S. citizens have been minted. When the kids are adults they have an automatic right to sponsor their parents for green cards, so eventually this one family will be responsible for perhaps 40 or 50 legal immigrants from Honduras to the U.S.

Europe’s problem is a socialist mindset that treats energy abundance like a sin, then acts shocked when heat becomes deadly. They brag about “free” healthcare while living with lower wages, smaller homes, weaker growth, rationed comfort and national security subsidized by Americans. Yeah so the difference here Joshua is that the Amish are Americans that are citizens and are here legally and love the country. And who “the right” want deported are those here illegally, are not citizens, and hate the country. They may live differently, but they are not trying to conquer, replace, exploit, or transform America into something unrecognizable. They are not demanding the country bend around them. They are not flooding the courts, gaming asylum loopholes, waving foreign flags, taking welfare dollars or lecturing Americans about how evil their own country is. That is the difference. When Helene hit us, hundreds of Amish came and helped us. They are still here 1.5 years later, still rebuilding. You want to know who didn’t come? No a single immigrant from Somalia.
