Washington is being told that the income tax will only target the very wealthiest. Yet, history tells a different story: income taxes that start on the highest earners always expand to include lower earners. Even Washington's own legislators refused to pass amendments to cap the income tax to only millionaires.

Washington's new income tax is the final straw for Jon Bodwell, owner of Delta Camshaft. Jon is the 2nd generation owner of this camshaft modification shop that has been in Tacoma for 48 years, but is selling the (graffiti covered) building and moving everything to Arizona. He cites "crime, taxes, and business climate" as reasons he is leaving, and frankly who can blame him? If a business cannot make a profit in Washington state or has to deal with a hostile government, they are going to go where the grass is greener. Seattle's housing market is going through a historic inventory shock. There are now 8,630 listings across the Seattle metro as of Apr 2026. In a normal April, there are only 4,600 listings. Meaning inventory today is 88% above normal. This is happening due to layoffs, a historic lack of affordability, and increased outbound migration. Ultimately, good news for local Seattle buyers.
