🌍 To kick off London Climate Action Week (@london_climate), we co-hosted a roundtable and reception yesterday with @ConservationOrg at the Aga Khan Centre — bringing together leaders from philanthropy, impact investment, and sustainability. In alignment with the panel discussion we hosted at the @OurOceanOOC last week, the two-part London event centred on a core premise: ocean recovery is not only a conservation challenge, but also an economic one. With contributions from AKF’s Apoorva Oza and Didier Van Bignoot, Meizani Irmadhiany (Konservasi Indonesia) and Jana Lessenich (Conservation International), the roundtable examined how ocean health, livelihoods and economic incentives intersect, and what is needed to translate proven solutions into impact at scale. With more than 100 attendees, the reception built on this discussion – creating space to strengthen partnerships and identify opportunities for collaboration to scale community-led climate solutions. The opening remarks were given by Conservation International Board Member Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim and CEO Sebastian Troëng, as well as Prince Hussain Aga Khan and AKF’s Dr Matt Reed. 🌊 At the @OurOceanOOC in Mombasa this week, we co-hosted a panel discussion with @ConservationOrg – bringing together leaders from government, conservation and community organisations working across the Western Indian Ocean. The discussion reframed a critical challenge: ocean recovery is not only an environmental issue, but an economic one. While global commitments to protect the ocean are growing, coastal ecosystems continue to decline where economic systems favour short-term extraction over long-term stewardship. Drawing on practical experience from the region, speakers including Benson Kirathe (State Department of Blue Economy and Fisheries, Kenya), Susan Otieno (AKF Kenya), Seif Hamisi (Conservation International), and Bosco Juma (Big Ship) explored what works in practice – from sustainable fisheries and habitat restoration to community-led enterprise. The message was clear: when these approaches generate reliable, long-term income for coastal communities, compliance strengthens, governance improves and ecosystems recover. 🇮🇳 Last month, teachers in India presented their classroom innovations at the @schools2030 National Showcase in Patna, #India. The event brought together educators from primary, secondary and senior secondary schools, government representatives, researchers and early childhood care workers. Attendees had the opportunity to explore a range of vibrant stalls celebrating teacher-led innovation and transformative learning. The event highlighted the power of teacher agency in reimagining classrooms, with educators showcasing innovative, scalable solutions designed to strengthen learning outcomes and inspire change across schools. 🤝 AKF is pleased to announce a new grant agreement with #PATRIPFoundation, building on our long-standing partnership to support communities in #Tajikistan. Over the next two and a half years, the €1.6m initiative will strengthen social cohesion and resilience in border areas of Sughd, reaching over 5,600 people directly and 84,500 indirectly. The programme will deliver impact through a combination of infrastructure and community-focused activities, including: 🪁 New community spaces: construction of a youth centre, early childhood education (ECD) facilities, and a kindergarten to expand access to safe, inclusive services 🚀 Skills and opportunities for young people: entrepreneurship and employability training, financial and digital literacy, plus seed funding for youth-led innovation ⚖️ Promoting gender equality: leadership, participation and skills development for women and girls to support inclusive community development 📣 Addressing gender-based violence: awareness raising through local media channels and collaboration with women and youth-led organisations ❤️‍🩹 Mental health and psychosocial support: safe spaces, counselling and training for local service providers This project is financed by the German Federal Foreign Office (#GFFO) through PATRIP Foundation and #KfW. 📚 AKF is proud to have partnered with the Lake District Book Festival on its inaugural event in the UK’s Lake District this past weekend. The festival brought audiences together around a shared love of the written and spoken word, while also delivering a boost to the local economy. Over three days, @Cartmelrace welcomed world-renowned writers, journalists and thinkers, with discussions spanning global affairs to the intersection of food and mental health. As a founding sponsor, AKF supported two talks, including a highlight session with broadcaster and author @TheZeinabBadawi on her book, 'An African History of Africa'. The festival also showcased Christopher Wilton-Steer's 'The Silk Road: A Living History', a photographic publication illustrating the cultural heritage, landscapes and communities connected through @AKDN’s work across Central and South Asia – and which seeks to foster greater understanding between cultures and challenge dominant perceptions of less well-known regions. This work forms part of a major infrastructure development project that is underway to ensure safe and reliable access to drinking water for residents. 🌱 At Madamu Primary School in Morogoro, #Tanzania, students are cultivating food and green-fingered practical skills in their school garden. Introduced through AKF’s Maendeleo initiative, the school garden is now part of everyday learning, with pupils planting, watering and maintaining crops. By practising regenerative farming and making their own biopesticides and bio‑foliar solutions, students gain skills they can use at home while helping improve school nutrition. 🌊 On #WorldOceansDay earlier this week, AKF signed a new agreement with @@AFD_France to support the reconstruction and sustainable development of #Mayotte. The agreement sets out an initial €8.5 million towards lagoon regeneration, coastal water quality, mangrove restoration and the advancement of agroecological practices following the impacts of Cyclone Chido. 💧 Last week, AKF joined partners in Dushanbe, #Tajikistan, at the 4th High‑Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018–2028. The conference was part of the Dushanbe Water Process – a long‑standing initiative of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, delivered in cooperation with the UN, to advance the objectives of the UN Water Action Decade through a series of high‑level conferences held every two years. This year’s gathering brought together governments, UN agencies, scientists, civil society groups and communities to accelerate progress on water‑related #SDGs. The conference focused on mobilising action, strengthening partnerships and preparing for the 2026 UN Water Conference, while also opening early discussions for the 2028 global review of the Water Action Decade. As part of the conference, AKF Tajikistan co‑organised four key events: ❄️ Central Asian Coordination Forum – advancing regional cooperation on glacier and cryosphere monitoring. 🏔️ Water and Climate Risks – marking 115 years of Lake Sarez and highlighting risk-informed climate resilience. ⚖️ 2026 Women Water Forum – elevating women’s leadership in water governance. 🌱 Ecosystem Restoration Convergence – co-hosted with ACTED Tajikistan, promoting sustainable land management and healthier ecosystems. 🌎 These students in Bishkek, #KyrgyzRepublic, have been reimagining their schools as more climate-friendly spaces. During a school showcase, they presented ideas for making their schools and communities more climate resilient. Their mocked-up ideas took the form of 3D models, including working windmills, greenhouses and schools surrounded by trees. As part of the event, the students also took real climate action – planting tree seedlings in the school grounds. 🌊 Today, on #WorldOceansDay, meet Laxmiben – a mangrove conservationist from Gujarat, #India. Together with women from her community, Laxmiben is working to protect and restore mangrove forests by planting seedlings in degraded areas. Almost one-third of India’s coastline is lined with mangroves, home to 37 of the world’s 64 mangrove species. With the country’s second‑largest mangrove cover, Gujarat is a critical region for investing in mangrove conservation. At AKF, we are supporting the communities that depend on these coastlines for their livelihoods to lead these efforts. Women like Laxmiben are at the forefront of this work – she has even gained a new nickname in her community as ‘mangrove planter and protector’. 🌎 Today, on #WorldEnvironmentDay, meet Bhikhubhai. Bhikhubhai is a farmer from Gujarat, #India, who, as well as rearing cattle, has recently switched to regenerative farming practices to grow his crops. Now, he produces his own organic fertilisers and pesticides using animal waste and plants grown around his farm. These methods help restore soil health, reduce input costs, improve farmers’ health by eliminating chemical inputs, increase productivity, support biodiversity and raise incomes. 🪶 In rural #Syria, pigeon towers are supporting sustainable livelihoods for farming families. With AKF's support, the residents of six villages in Salamieh have constructed a set of pigeon towers – traditional yet innovative structures designed with climate resilience in mind. The towers utilise clay and local materials to ensure natural insulation and low environmental impact. 🌍 Last week, AKF was delighted to participate in #RomeNutritionWeek, a global convening bringing together the UN, governments, civil society and donors to strengthen joint approaches and practical pathways to accelerate nutrition progress in an evolving global context. Representing AKF, Carolyn O’Donnell, Global Lead for Nutrition, and Georgina Maynard, Senior Partnerships Manager, joined partners to advance discussions on the critical links between nutrition, climate resilience and agrifood systems. Carolyn spoke on a panel titled “Unlocking Climate Finance: Better Diets and Reduced Food Loss & Waste”, where she highlighted how the @akdn intentionally integrates nutrition outcomes into climate and biodiversity investments. This included insights from AKF’s work in regenerative agriculture, livelihoods and climate resilience – and examples such as the Regeneration initiative, which demonstrates how ecosystem restoration can strengthen food security and dietary diversity along the Indian Ocean coast. On the panel, Carolyn was joined by representatives of governments around the world and organisations including @UNEP, @FAO, @WHO and @theGEF.
