Ibn Taymiyyah said : Imam Ahmad was asked about two men who could be commanders in a military campaign: one is strong and wicked, while the other is righteous and weak; with which of them should one go to war? He replied: "As for the wicked, strong man: his strength is for the Muslims, while his wickedness is against himself. As for the righteous, weak man: his righteousness is for himself, while his weakness is against the Muslims. Therefore, fight alongside the strong wicked man." And the Prophet ﷺ said: "Indeed, Allah supports this religion even through a wicked man." And it was reported: "...through people who have no share of good [in the Hereafter]." If he is not wicked, he is all the more deserving of military command over someone who is more righteous in religion if that other person cannot fill the position effectively. For this reason, the Prophet ﷺ appointed Khalid ibn al-Walid over war ever since he accepted Islam, saying: "Khalid is a sword that Allah has drawn against the polytheists." Even though Khalid would sometimes do things that the Prophet ﷺ disapproved of—to the extent that once, the Prophet ﷺ raised his hands to the sky and said: "O Allah, I declare my innocence to You from what Khalid has done," when he sent him to the tribe of Banu Jadhimah and he killed them and took their wealth based on a misinterpretation (doubt). This was not permissible, and some Companions who were with him disapproved of it, until the Prophet ﷺ paid blood money for them and compensated for their goods. Despite this, the Prophet ﷺ continued to put him forward in military command, because he was the most suitable in this domain compared to others.

THE ZŪḤD AND ṬAQWĀ OF THE ḤEARTS. One Of The Most Erudite Exhortations Of The Early Mūṣlīms On Zūḥd, Humility, And Preparation For The ʿĀkhīrāḥ [Hereafter]. Kḥalīd b. ʿUmaīr Āl-ʿĀdāwī [رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ]; Was A Ṭābiʿī From The Noble Generations Of The Distinguished Ṭābiʿūn. The Ephemeral World And The Everlasting Truth Of The ʿĀkhīrāḥ: The Profound Khuṭbāḥ Of The Esteemed Ṣaḥābī Of The Propḥet Muḥammād ❖ The Esteemed Ṭābiʿī; Kḥalīd b. ʿUmaīr Āl-ʿĀdāwī [رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ]; Reported — And He Had Witnessed The Pre-Iṣlāmīc Days As Well — That ʿUṭbāḥ Ibn ʿGḥaẓwān Āl-Māẓinī [رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ] [c. 581–638 CE] — Delivered This Profound Kḥuṭbāḥ, While Serving As The Governor Of Baṣrāḥ [Modern Day ʾĪrāq]. ❖ The Esteemed Ṭābiʿī; Kḥalīd b. ʿUmaīr Āl-ʿĀdāwī [رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ] — Reported That The Esteemed Ṣaḥābī; ʿUṭbāḥ Ibn ʿGḥaẓwān Āl-Māẓinī [رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ] [c. 581–638 CE] — Delivered Us A Kḥuṭbāḥ And He Praised Āllāḥ ﷻ, And Lauded Him; Then Ṣaid: ❝Now Coming To The Point, Verily! The World [Dunyā], has been given The News of its End and that too Quite Early. Nothing would be left out of it but only Water left in the Utensil which its owner leaves, and you are going to shift to an Abode which knows no End, and you should shift with the good before you, for we have been told that a Stone would be thrown at one side of the Hell and it would go down even for Seventy Years but would not be able To Reach Its Bottom. By Āllāḥ ﷻ! It Would Be Fully Packed. Do you find it something Strange, and it has been mentioned that there Yawns a Distance which one would be able to cover in Forty Years from one end to another of Jannāḥ [Paradise], and day would come when it would be Fully Packed and You Must Be Knowing. That I Was The Seventh Amongst Seven, who had been with Messenger Of Āllāḥ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, and we had nothing to Eat but the Leaves of the Tree until the corners of the Mouth were Injured. We found a Sheet which we tore in two and divided between Myself and Ṣāʿḍ Ibn ʿĀbī Waqqāṣ [رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ]. I Made The Lower Garment with halt of it and so did Ṣāʿḍ Ibn ʿĀbī Waqqāṣ [رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ], make the Lower Garment with half of it and today there is none amongst us who has not become the Governor of a City From Amongst The Cities [Of The Iṣlāmīc Commonwealth]: “And I Seek Refuge With Āllāḥ ﷻ, That I Should Consider Myself Great, Whereas I Am Insignificant In The Sight Of Āllāḥ ﷻ.” Propḥethood does not Remain for ever and its impact fades with the result that it changes eventually into Kingship and you would soon come to Know and Experience those Rulers who would come After Us And See [How Far They Are From Religion].❞ Ṣaḥīḥ Mūṣlīm; Ḥadītḥ No. 2967. ❖ The Following Is A Profound Kḥuṭbāḥ Delivered By The Noble Ṣaḥābī Of The Propḥet Muḥammād صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ, ʿUṭbāḥ Ibn ʿGḥaẓwān Āl-Māẓinī [رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ] [c. 581–638 CE], As Transmitted By The Distinguished Ṭābiʿī; Kḥalīd B. ʿUmaīr Āl-ʿĀdāwī [رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ]. It Is A Timeless Reminder Of The Fleeting Nature Of This Worldly Life, The Certainty Of Āl-ʿĀkhīrāḥ, The Humility Of The Righteous, And The Responsibility That Accompanies Worldly Authority. Its Lessons Remain As Relevant Today As When They Were First Delivered.
