A neuroscientist at Johns Hopkins spent 30 years proving that the human brain was designed to do its best work hungry, and the modern habit of eating every few hours is the reason most people feel slow and foggy at the desk. His name is Mark Mattson. He spent two decades running the Laboratory of Neurosciences at the National Institute on Aging before joining the faculty at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and he is one of the most cited neuroscientists alive. His TED talk is called Why Fasting Bolsters Brain Power, and the body of work behind it has quietly become the scientific foundation of the entire intermittent fasting movement. The argument starts with an evolutionary observation that is almost embarrassingly obvious once you see it. For almost all of human history, food was not stored in a refrigerator twenty feet from where you slept. Food had to be found, chased, killed, gathered, or stolen, and the body that found it was a body that had been running on empty for hours or days. The humans whose brains went foggy and slow in the absence of food did not survive long enough to reproduce. The humans whose brains sharpened, focused, and locked onto the next meal did. Evolution selected, over hundreds of thousands of years, for a brain that performs at its best when the stomach is empty, because that is exactly when peak performance was most needed. Mattson's career was about figuring out the actual biological machinery behind that selection. The mechanism he eventually mapped is called the metabolic switch. For roughly the first twelve hours after you eat, your body is burning glucose, which is the sugar from the food you just consumed and the glucose stored in your liver as a reserve called glycogen. Somewhere between hour twelve and hour sixteen of not eating, that reserve runs out. When the liver glycogen is gone, your body has no choice but to switch fuels, and it starts burning fat instead. As it breaks down that fat, it produces a molecule called beta-hydroxybutyrate, a ketone that the brain can use as an alternative energy source. The ketone is not just fuel. This is the part Mattson spent decades proving. Beta-hydroxybutyrate is also a signaling molecule. When it shows up in the bloodstream, it triggers the production of a protein in the brain called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or BDNF, which Mattson calls Miracle-Gro for the brain. BDNF strengthens the connections between existing neurons, encourages the growth of new ones, and protects the brain against the damage of aging and disease. The more BDNF you produce, the better your brain learns, the faster it forms memories, and the longer it stays sharp. In animal studies Mattson ran across decades, mice on intermittent fasting schedules had significantly higher BDNF levels in the hippocampus, which is the region of the brain most responsible for learning and memory. They performed better on memory tests, learned new tasks faster, and showed measurable resistance to the brain damage that normally accumulates with aging. The fasted brain was not just surviving the absence of food. It was upgrading itself. The same effects have now been documented across more than a hundred human studies, and the pattern Mattson predicted from the animal data has held up. Intermittent fasting improves performance on tasks that require focus, memory, and verbal recall. It reduces markers of brain inflammation. It enhances the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the system responsible for calm and clarity. In one of the cleanest reviews of the field, published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience in 2018, Mattson and his colleagues laid out the case that the modern habit of eating three large meals a day plus snacks is keeping the entire metabolic switch permanently turned off, and the brain that evolved to thrive on hunger almost never gets to do what it was built to do. The implication is the part that should change how you think about the next time you skip breakfast. The grogginess you feel during the first few hours of fasting is your body burning through the last of its glucose. The clarity you feel after roughly hour sixteen, when most people think they should be falling apart, is your brain flipping the switch your ancestors flipped every day of their lives. Ketones rising. BDNF climbing. Focus sharpening. The hunter waking up inside you. None of this means everyone should fast, and Mattson has been careful to point out that fasting is not appropriate for people who are pregnant, underweight, recovering from an eating disorder, or managing certain medical conditions. The findings are about a system the body has, not a prescription that fits every body. But the system is real. The mechanism is mapped. And the science says the same thing the cave painters seemed to already know thousands of years ago. The hungry brain is the sharp brain. It always has been.

Ever run MEMMAKER or edit CONFIG.SYS? Here's a story... One of my very first projects at Microsoft was for MS-DOS 6.2, and it involved moving the Doublespace compression engine and parts of SmartDrv into the HMA, or High Memory Area. Then you could run MEMMAKER, and it would find up to 25K more than you had before. 25K was a big deal in that place and time! The only problem was that I was new to x86 and had no idea what the HMA even was. It turns out that on an 80286, when you get to the top of the 1M area, what happens if you point "past" it by combining your segment and offset registers to a value greater than 1M? In other words, does your pointer wrap at 1M or go up into high memory that might be installed? On an 8088, all it can do is wrap. But on an 80286, it COULD be resolved into the next higher pages of memory. But which behavior should the system do? To solve this, IBM used the A20 line on the PC, which is actually a keyboard line. If set, your pointers wrapped, and if not, they went into high memory. This gave you the ability to reach into "memory above 1M" even on a 1M system, which is kinda crazy, but that's how it worked. So I put all the code I could stuff into the 64K right above the 1M boundary, then stubbed everything with jump tables in low memory. I forget why the net was only 25K and not 64K - but there were probably other HMA consumers as well, I imagine. Anyway, that's how I spent the first month of the summer of 1993! And there was much rejoicing.
