Y me quedó una cosa bastante clara: es muy fácil envidiar la vida de alguien cuando solo cuentas lo que tiene. Prueba alguna vez a contar también lo que falta.

The absolute best way that I have ever found cash work has been by helping contractors load their materials at the "pro" bay at Lowe's. Literally stick a lunch and a gallon of water in a backpack, show up at 5am, and start helping guys load lumber and such into their trucks. Don't ask if they need help, just jump in. In my experience they will always accept the help gladly and without hesitation because the morning crowd is in a rush. While loading, ask: "so what are you working on today?" They'll tell you, then say: "do you need an extra set of hands today? I'm looking for work and am ready to go." I'm telling you, after having done this hundreds of times, I have found work every single day that I have ever done this. All of the work was same-day-pay, all cash, and usually led to more work as long as I worked my ass off on day one. I have never been scammed out of pay doing this. My rate has generally been $125 per 8-hour day. I've gone as low as $100 -- and I've had guys pay me as much as $225/day when they were impressed by my effort. Especially lately, as migrants are in short supply, this is a golden opportunity for anyone short on cash but high on muscle and get-up-and-go. Speaking a little Spanish helps but isn't required. Seriously, if you're young, broke, and strong -- try it. It was my primary means of supporting myself for almost a decade and even now, years later, I genuinely miss it.

Gatorade used to have brominated vegetable oil in it, BVO, which is patented as a flame retardant and was banned in Europe and Japan. A 15 year old named Sarah Kavanagh read the label in 2012, looked it up, and started a petition that got 200,000 signatures. PepsiCo took it out in January 2013 and said it wasn't a safety decision, FDA allowed it, they were responding to customers. Coke and Pepsi took it out of everything else in 2014. Mountain Dew kept it until around 2020. FDA didn't ban it until August 2024, after NIH studies found it builds up in tissue and affects the thyroid. It had been sitting on FDA's interim additive list since 1970. By the time they got around to banning it, every major company had already taken it out on their own, and the reason they did was a 15 year old with a petition.
