Day 5 of the Huracan bikepacking adventure with #adventuresofpenny This was a short day by design. A late wake and early finish on an easy bike path for about 15 miles. Penny slept good, it was a chilly night. She was in the tent before it was finished setting up. But she was wide awake and ready to run when we set out on our final day. Just 15 miles today to complete a 250 mile 5 day adventure touring some of the most beautiful scenery Florida has to offer through the Ocala National a forest. Every year there’s an event called the Florida Divide It’s a self supported bike-packing event from Fargo, GA to Key West, FL. Just over 1000 miles This route is also the final leg in the Eastern a divide which is a route that connects via mostly off road from Maine to Key West. One day Penny and I will be doing this Since we live in south Florida, very few bike packers do, we offer to pickup any riders out of key west. It’s a logistical challenge for most riders. This year we met up with Chris Philips. He has ridden the entire eastern divide, though not all at once. Chris is also a bilateral amputee. Yes that’s correct and he still did this entire ride self supported. This video is part of our journey to pick him up from Key West and get him back to Virginia. Day 4 of 5 of our 250 mile bikepacking adventure around Ocala National Forest. The day brings us up the Withlacoochee Trail. A paved path for over 30 miles through small rural towns of central Florida. So much beauty through this corridor and plenty of places to take a break. We took a lot of breaks on this day. The 4th day of a long trip is always a difficult one as it’s the time when the body just starts getting comfortable with the pain of riding so much. Penny is such a trooper though. While most dogs barely spend a couple hours a day doing activities, she’s up and out everyday on the bike for 8-10 hours of full blown physical activity. And loving it. There’s never a moment without a smile or look of excitement and curiosity. Just a reminder that Penny had major torn ACL surgery just over a year ago and still struggles today, but always manages to pull it together. Proud daddy for sure! Today was also a hard push into Shangri-La campground. This is where the grand depart took place and most everyone else is finishing. I designed our custom route to allow us to meet up with other riders that were much faster and could go further in a day, so we could be more interactive with everyone instead of being left behind. The one part of this section not in this video is the evening finish where Penny had to get out of the trailer, well after 7pm and run a mile of tough single track. That part of the course was not wide enough for the trailer so we had no choice. And boy did she put out! She never held us up, right into camp. Day 3 of our 250 mile 5 day bikepacking trip towing my dog #adventuresofpenny. We rode from our camp at Willow Tree through the Green Swamp and some rough sandy grassy roads. Few mud puddles and lots of heat. It was a short mileage day only 35 miles today but a long day on the route as the conditions were tough. Day 2 of 5 of our 250 mile bikepacking tour of Ocala National Forest on the HuRaCaN route designed by #singletracksamurai and modified for #adventuresofpenny Another long 65 mile day from Samurai camp in Seminole Forest down to Willow Tree camp in Green Swamp. Some of the highest hills in Clermont Florida led to a 1500 mile day towing 175 lbs of penny and gear. She ran many hills to keep us on track as it’s quicker than pulling her up them. We stopped for lunch at chipotle, a nice treat to cooking our food at camp. The weather was iffy, cloudy and misty. Lots of great bike paths including memorial trail and our scenic ride around Lake Apopka with all the gators 🐊 and wildlife where it was the hottest time of the day. Here we go Day 1 of our 5 day adventure. Biking 250 miles around Ocala National Forest. Towing my rescue dog in a @BurleyDesign trailer. Total weight 175 lbs plus rider 😆 Sometimes she runs, sometimes she rides, sometimes she just walks along. Often she naps and always late she sleeps 😴 😝 Penny averaged about 5 miles a day. Much lower than before she had surgery for her torn acl. Working her way back to 10-15/day. But she never runs out of energy in the trailer. She is up and dancing around the entire ride. Mostly looking for squirrels and putting smiles on everyone we pass. We spend 8-10 hours riding and a few resting. It’s not a race for us, it’s all about the adventure. Getting outdoors and figuring out the world with just a few necessities we bring along. And the occasional stop for a local brewery and a cider. We grab fresh food from farmers markets along the route to add to our freeze dried meals. Easily made boiling water with our @SoloStove which means there’s always fresh hot coffee! We pack as light as possible because every ounce matters when tra leaving these distances, but it’s hard to leave behind a few items to keep us comfortable too. I took my 5 yr old rescue dog Penny on a 5 day 250 mile bikepacking adventure. We were self supported meaning we couldn’t get any help from anyone along the way. We brought our own freeze dried meals and cooked them on a @SoloStove where we primitive camped along the route. The bike, trailer, dog and gear weighed about 175lbs. We climbed over 4500ft of elevation in Florida! This is the first of a series documenting our journey. Beginning with carefully selecting what we bring and how it gets packed on the bike.
