@thenaimark @constans It's misleading. Those salaries are top pay for the most successful few percent. Average pay for a lawyer is not the millions you see for biglaw partner, it's $130k. The top few percent doctors also make a million+.

@DrDiGiorgio That's not at all how social security works. It guarantees baseline income even if your career ends up sucking and you end up with well below median income. It also guarantees that you can't outlive your savings once you get there.

@cafreiman It's always (or at least for a long time) been both. The benefit formula is not a flat function of contributions, it's redistributive. The core goal of the program was to reduce senior poverty, but there is some personal savings as well, where those who put in more get more.
