The plumbing is HTTP 402 — the status code reserved "for future use" 30 years ago. The future is x402 (now under the x402 Foundation / Linux Foundation, with Coinbase, Google, Stripe, Visa, Circle). Request → 402 with payment terms → agent signs → resource delivered.
