Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic, has misused his control of WordPress to interfere with WP Engine customers’ access to WordPress.org, asserting that he did so because WP Engine filed litigation against Wordpress.org. This simply is not true. Our Cease & Desist letter was a letter – not a lawsuit – and was directed at Automattic for Matt’s pattern of serious and repeated misconduct – behavior that must stop for the health and stability of the entire community. Matt Mullenweg’s unprecedented and unwarranted action interferes with the normal operation of the entire WordPress ecosystem, impacting not just WP Engine and our customers, but all WordPress plugin developers and open-source users who depend on WP Engine tools like ACF. We are taking immediate steps to remediate the impact of this action. We remain steadfastly committed to supporting WP Engine customers, users, and the entire WordPress community.

Here’s what is really happening. Someone is hosting a website on WP Engine that someone else needs to get hacked. By turning off the ability to update plugins and themes - this increases the likelihood of this happening. It creates a clean evidentiary trail. None of this has anything to do with trademarks or hosting.

Let me see if I understand this: @pressable, which is the hosting company owned by @automattic, which is run by @photomatt, who just completely shut down core functionality to @wpengine and screwed all of the WordPress site owners on that platform without warning anyone in the community about it first, is now anticipating that perhaps we might be unhappy with our services, so they're going to rescue us? Am I wrong, or does this feel like a murderer adopting his victim's children because clearly the corpse in the corner isn't fit to be a parent anymore?

I made the same point, @NewYorkerLaura. My company serves hundreds of volunteer non-profit website owners affiliated with @Rotary International. My 8-year relationship with WPEngine is what led me to convince my company to move all of our sites over to their servers. Thousands of Rotarians count on the @WordPress platform and @wpengine services to drive their communication and outreach. Now what? How do I explain this to any of them? I can count on one hand the number of these volunteers who know who @photomatt is and even fewer who have any idea what's going on. All they will know is that the bottom fell out of services they rely on tonight.

Same! I've been a customer for 8 years, which is how I convinced my new employer a year ago to move all of our @WordPress clients over to @wpengine.
