I had "the talk" with my daughter last night. Not about drugs. About AI. And honestly? It felt more important. We're raising the first generation that will never know a world without AI. Their brains are developing alongside these tools. And just like we taught our kids that not every feeling needs medication, not every problem needs a substance to cope with it... they need to know that not every thought needs AI, not every question needs ChatGPT, and not every challenge needs to be outsourced. Your brain is a muscle. If AI does all your pushups, you get weak. I told her: "You need to learn when to use it, and when to tell it to fuck off." Use AI when: - You need to move fast on grunt work - You're prototyping ideas - You're learning a new domain and need a scaffold Ignore it when: - You're learning something hard for the first time - You're developing taste and judgment - You're building the mental models that make you YOU The kids who win won't be the ones who prompt best. They'll be the ones who know when NOT to prompt. We're not teaching them to avoid AI. We're teaching them to be stronger than it. To have conviction. To know when their "wrong" answer after deep thinking is worth more than AI's "right" answer. Because in 20 years, the valuable humans won't be the ones who can operate AI. Everyone will do that. The valuable humans will be the ones whose brains were trained to think deeply, struggle with hard problems, and develop intuition that no amount of tokens can replicate. Teach your kids to use AI. But please... teach them to ignore it too. Their prefrontal cortex is counting on you.

Reminder: your opinions on AI can be both critical and positive. This is not a binary issue. You’re allowed to be both amazed and horrified by the potential of AI at the same time. Sometimes I get messages like: “You don’t like AI anymore?” “Oh wow, I didn’t know you were all-in on AI!” Why does every opinion now have to be all or nothing? When did we lose the ability to be nuanced about complex topics... especially something as big as AI?
