For any sort of Hardscape definitely hired out. My back would’ve been destroyed by the end of it and it’s not worth the time to only be able to do it for a few hours each weekend because I have little kids. Painting is tough because you definitely knock it out in a reasonable amount of time and if you have even a halfway decent attention to detail then you could probably be a decent painter. Always a time vs money debate

In 2019 my wife and I bought this house. A very well maintained 1960s ranch. Our first house. I was 3 years into my woodworking business but had never done any sort of remodel work. So I was very green on electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and even drywall. I was on a mission to improve the dated interior and to learn as much as I could so I read/watched/listened to everything I could. My former business partner convinced me to go all in on a remodel. He had just renovated his 100 yr old home. He helped out a few weekends during the first month or so and I learned a ton from him about everything behind the walls. After demo, wiring, and a new gas line for the dryer, my wife and I took the project the rest of the way and clocked in 12 months of nights and weekends remodeling our first home. Living with her parents throughout the project. It was one of the most challenging years of my life. We got married halfway through the remodel, I was trying to grow my business, and spending 6-9p every weekday and 12-16 hr days on weekends working on the house. Refinished hardwood, new trim, painted everything, all new kitchen, new bathrooms, etc. We were exhausted by the end of that year and we finally moved in February 2020. The next month the pandemic hit and construction costs skyrocketed for the next few years. We were all in $36k in material to refinish every square inch of the interior. Didn’t hire a single contractor. Something I’m super proud of to this day. Fast forward 6 years later and we nearly spent that on just the patio, fire pit, walkway, and mulch beds. Really puts it into perspective how far $1 went even just 6 years ago. Regardless, I’m very grateful for the DIY experience and grateful we were now in a position to hire a contractor for this type of work. Believe it or not, the first contractor we’ve ever hired to do anything major to the house.

Contractors finally wrapped up patio, fire pit, retaining wall, walkway, and new mulch beds. After 3 weeks of a snails pace, they rushed the last 2 days to finish because other customers are yelling at them to start their jobs. They left the mulch beds like this around the

@stock_RIP My Wife and I DIY renovated the entire interior of our house for $36k in 2019. Took a year of nights and weekends but it’s crazy to think we basically just spent that on a patio.

Contractors finally wrapped up patio, fire pit, retaining wall, walkway, and new mulch beds. After 3 weeks of a snails pace, they rushed the last 2 days to finish because other customers are yelling at them to start their jobs. They left the mulch beds like this around the retaining wall. Didn’t define or edge new beds, just threw mulch on top of fill and too soil. The stone work is solid and I’m happy with it overall but some minor details were overlooked. They spread a bunch of top soil and graded near the walkway where I need to grow new grass so that was helpful as it wasn’t in their scope. However, I’m going to need to redo the beds around the fire pit. I paid $32k all in for stone work, walkway, footings for pergola, and mulch beds. If you were me, would you call them back to finish out the fire pit beds properly or just leave it alone and tackle it yourself?

If you’re looking for the wrong way to build stairs, this is it. These start ~7’ above grade. Stringers barely touching, random blocking, and basically floating at the top. The kind of work that makes inspectors lose sleep and homeowners call in a real GC later. Who else has
