The Power of Freezing Water!!! In this short, I talk about scree! Scree in this case, are fields of rock broken up by freeze-thaw cycles over thousands of years. Water gets in small cracks on rocks and the extreme temperatures on mountaintops make the water freeze and expand and melt over and over again, creating massive fields of rubble. A study on the nearby Mont Comte showed that the scree can reach up to 8 meters deep! Alternatively, scree is also used to describe fields of rock at the bottom of cliffs. This freeze-thaw action is also what helps rip apart asphalt on roads in places with winter climate, giving us bumpier roads… #scree #fieldwork #environment #alpine #gaspesie #ice #rocks #lichen #publicscholar

So COP 29 started this week and the context is NOT GOOD. The annual UN conference on climate change is taking place in a country where half its GDP is from oil and after a DEVASTATING report about climate finance from Oxfam. The report shows that nearly 40% of the World Bank's climate finance portfolio is unaccounted for - that's up to 40 billion dollars. Untraceable. No proof of use or outcome. The purpose of this money was to help mid to low income countries become more resilient to climate change. @TheTreeCorener The max and averages ages vary widely from site to site. The oldest I’ve found on a Québec mountain top is in the Gaspésie’s high peaks: white spruce of around 230 years. Average age of my 8 sites hovers around 80-100 except for Mont Albert (56).
