To the people of Clacton. While Nigel Farage was nowhere to be seen, I turned up for you. I walked your streets. I saw your town. I know what Clacton actually needs and it is not this circus. Clacton is a beautiful seaside town with real people, real history and real potential. You deserve investment, tourism, pride and a representative who actually shows up. What you have been given instead is Britain's most controversial politician using your town as a backdrop for his personal ambition while delivering nothing. He’s been selective in supporting businesses in your area as promo and ignored the rest of you. He resigned yesterday not for you. He resigned for himself. You are his human shield. He is using a by-election in your constituency to try to reframe a parliamentary standards investigation into a story about him versus the establishment. He’s the most elitist political figure in the UK. That investigation does not go away. It resumes the moment the by-election is over. He has been reusing old photos on social media. He visits businesses owned by his supporters and calls it community engagement. He has made Clacton infamous when it deserved to be celebrated. What could be funnier than the idea that Nigel Farage is an honest man? On Newsnight, Green party MP Hannah Spencer faced off against Reform's candidate for London mayor Laila Cunningham – and laughed at the suggestion that Farage has been "very honest" amid a scandal over an undeclared £5m gift. Spencer said Farage’s decision to trigger and then stand in a new byelection – which he has presented as a referendum on his character amid allegations of wrongdoing – will be bad for his constituents. "What it does is it throws people in that constituency, who are already struggling, like so many people in the country, into further turmoil," Spencer said.
Nigel Farage's Clacton constituency has around 98K people. About 78K are registered to vote, around 45K voted, and just over 21K voted for him. Clacton is one of the oldest and least ethnically diverse constituencies in England and Wales, with 96.1% of residents identifying as white. It is also one of the poorest areas in the UK, with around 64% of the constituency considered "impoverished" This is why he thinks it is a safe seat for Farage because Instead of addressing years of underinvestment and communities being left behind he can just blame immigrants for people's struggles and says he's not part of the establishment and he's on their side.
