Today is the Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour.
The image is a Byzantine icon from the late Middle Ages and has resided in Rome since the late 1400s and is now in the care of the Redemptorists.
The image is to be found in many churches and homes across the world.
St. Alban.
On a hill beside a river
Stands the shrine of Britain's saint,
honoured, loved by those who know him.
Freed at last from all restraint,
For he stands with saints in glory
With his prayers our feet are shod
May our courage never fail us
As we journey home to God.
Corpus Christi, Jueves Santo
y el día de la Ascensión.
Ecce Panis Angelorum,
Factus cibus viatorum:
Vere panis filiorum,
Non mittendus canibus.

The Eve of Corpus Christi.
Jesu, whom I look at shrouded here below,
I beseech thee send me what I thirst for so,
Some day to gaze on thee face to face in light
And be blest for ever with Thy glory’s sight.
(Translation of the Adoro Te by the poet-priest Gerard Manley Hopkins)
This is the week of Corpus Christi. Though celebrated throughout Italy, certain places are famous for keeping it with the greatest solemnity.
One of the most popular traditions is the Infiorata of Genzano. Streets, carpeted with flowers, accompany the Eucharistic procession.
The best Trinity Sunday sermon that I have ever heard:
Priest took off maniple at altar and entered the pulpit for sermon. He said “In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.”
Then he left the pulpit, put on the maniple and led the people in the Nicene Creed.
Sermon Score: 10/10
In honor of Trinity Sunday, here is the "Nuestra Señora de la Santísima Trinidad," the largest ship in the world when it was launched in 1769. She was built in the Royal Spanish shipyard in Havana. A four deck ship of the line with 140 guns.
Ember Friday after Pentecost
"We must be convinced that if the Holy Spirit works in our souls to assimilate us to Christ, He can do so only by opening to us the way of the Cross... There can be no conformity to Him except by the Cross." - Fr. Gabriel
The Vigil of Pentecost.
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
And I will pray the Father,
and he will give you another Comforter,
that he may bide with you for ever;
e'en the Spirit of truth.

This is my mother on my wedding day. Look at how much she loved me. My life meant more to her than the trauma of the rape that produced me. She told me that the minute she held me after I was born, the trauma was gone forever and replaced by the love she felt for me. We went on to give her 2 granddaughters and 3 great grandsons. Her love left a legacy of a continuing family. Please don't abort your future happiness. No baby deserves a death sentence.
I'll sing a hymn to Mary,
The Mother of my God,
The Virgin of all virgins,
Of David's Royal blood.
O teach me, holy Mary,
A loving song to frame,
When wicked men blaspheme thee,
To love and bless thy name.
Today in the Diocese of Brentwood (which is my diocese) we remember one of our own sons, Saint John Payne, a quiet priest whose fidelity proved stronger than the machinery of a kingdom set against him. Born in the 1530s, Payne lived through the violent failed unravelling of England’s ancient faith. Ordained at the English College in Douai, France & sent back into a hostile land, he returned not as a firebrand but as a shepherd. In Essex he served the faithful discreetly, offering the sacraments, reconciling souls & sustaining a fragile Catholic community under the constant threat of arrest, torture & death. He did not live a life of spectacle, but of hidden courage, the daily martyrdom of obedience. Tragically, that hidden life ended in betrayal. Arrested & brought to trial, he was accused not of violence, nor of sedition in any ordinary sense, but simply of being a priest. In that moment, the State revealed its fear: not fear of rebellion, fear of grace.
On 2 April 1582, Payne was executed at Chelmsford. As he went to his death, he did not rage against his persecutors, he prayed for them. The scaffold became his pulpit; the rope, his final act of witness. In a world that demanded conformity at the cost of truth, he chose Christ. What, then, is his achievement? Not power, not influence, not the changing of laws. It is something far rarer. He remained faithful when faithfulness cost everything. He kept the Church alive in souls when it had been driven from public life. He proved that the priesthood is not a function granted by the State, but a gift sealed in sacrifice.
For us, his witness cuts through the noise of our own age. We are not yet asked to mount the scaffold, but we are asked to stand firm, to live the faith without compromise, to serve quietly when no one sees & to trust that grace works even in obscurity.
Saint John Payne did not save England. But he helped save the Faith in England. And that is why, centuries later, the Church still speaks his name. St. John Payne, pray for us! 🙏
One year ago today, the hauntingly beautiful Litany of the Saints in Latin as the Sacred College of Cardinals processed to the Sistine Chapel to be locked in Conclave to elect the successor of Saint Peter.
The author of "Clothed with Beauty: A Catholic Philosophy of Dress," Anna Kalinowska (in green at the center), surrounded by many of the friends who helped her in various ways with the drafting or perfecting of her book, at a dinner party she hosted to say thank you. They all pass the dress code with flying colors!
Check out the book that is redefining the entire conversation on fashion, modesty, priorities, and thoughtfulness. It has been flying off the shelf, and for good reason.
