So, if an Artist had two major records under a label/Mgt, leaves, and subsequently releases songs that fail to generate anything close to the same response, the interpretation is that: The Artist’s success wasn’t entirely self generated. The label’s creative infrastructure may have been a significant part of the formula. It could also be that the Artist never fully understood the process that produced those hits. They experienced the outcome without learning the methodology behind it. Some Artists know how to make hit records. Others only know how to work with people who know how to make hit records. When the latter lose that team, they suddenly discover that they don’t know how to reproduce the result independently. It may mean the label/Mgt wasn’t just providing money & distribution, but also providing the creative system that turned the Artiste’s talent into commercially viable music; There could be A&Rs who may have identified the right sound, Producers who may have been carefully selected, and the label/Mgt may have influenced song selection, collaboration, creative direction, timing and market positioning. The Artiste had the creativity, but the label/Mgt may have known how to organize that creativity for the market. This is why some Artistes struggle after leaving labels. They know how to make music, but never learned the process that made their music connect.
