I've been working on a piece about citizenship, service, and what we owe one another as members of the same country. More soon.
Service teaches something that's difficult to learn any other way: Other people are depending on you.
Citizenship gives us rights. What responsibilities should come with it?
Shared experiences matter. They don’t eliminate disagreement. They make disagreement easier to navigate.
One of the things I've appreciated most about military service is the chance to work with people whose life experiences were completely different from my own.
Most Americans will never serve in the military. That’s perfectly okay. Some people truly can’t for different reasons, and I’m not suggesting that everyone needs to. What I’m really thinking about this month is whether we should all find a meaningful way to serve our communities, states, and/or country.
Tomorrow I’m publishing a piece on immigration, legal pathways, and why functioning process matters more than most people realize. I think we’ve been framing this issue too narrowly for a long time.
I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes people lose faith in institutions. Most of the time, it isn’t just one big event. Instead, it’s a buildup of small problems like delays, confusion, and things not being consistent.
The goal for any government system (especially those concerning immigration) should be order, fairness, clarity, and credibility at the same time.
Enforcement is important. However, enforcement by itself is not enough to support all of immigration policy. A country also needs legal pathways that people can actually use.
Ellis Island had its flaws, but it stood for clarity. People arrived, underwent inspections of their health, financial stability, and other factors, and then received a decision. The process was efficient and easy to see.
The phrase “follow the legal process” only works if people believe the legal process is functioning in a reasonable way.
When legal pathways become difficult to navigate, the consequences don’t stay contained inside the bureaucracy. They spill outward.
A country has the right to decide who enters and under what conditions. But those decisions should be understandable, timely, and consistent.
Immigration debates usually happen at the level of politics. However, for most individuals, the process involves paperwork, waiting, uncertainty, and significant time commitments.
