The thing I'm missing most about Thanksgiving is the two months of group texts leading up to it where we send a hundred messages a day arguing about what to make and then wind up with the exact same menu we've had for the last 20 years. TRADITION!
Other things that might not be quite the compliment you're looking for: "You can really taste the oyster!" "I only threw up in my mouth a little!" "It's very nearly dessert!" "It's so creative!"
"It's not bad!" - exactly what every chef wants to hear upon presenting the dessert course.
I'm opting out of Thanksgiving again this year, but in case you're looking for a last minute dessert option, may I present...

@randy_silver @lauraklein Here is a cookie opinion: almost every homemade cookie is either over-beaten, over baked, or both. This is why most homemade cookies are tough. Also, most people screw up their ingredient temperatures.
@joehall @lauraklein Nobody is disputing that cherry pie is delicious. But fresh cherries are only really good for a few months a year during the summer. if you’re using canned cherries, you can make it whenever, but it’s not ‘seasonal’ except maybe in the Southern hemisphere.

I know there are a lot of favorite seasonal pies this time of year. But my favorite, hands down, is cherry. I’m prepared to agree to disagree with many of you.

I made my macadamia nut brittle recipe available to folks. I’m obviously not doing Thanksgiving this year, so no pie, but the brittle stays good for several days (I mean, I assume. I’ve never had it last past day 3.) so it’s good for mailing as a gift. docs.google.com/document/d/17s…
I really enjoy fancy cranberry sauce but if you were to, just hypothetically, make a turkey sandwich with cream cheese and cranberry, use the the stuff in the can.

Have informed the family that I will not be attending Thanksgiving due to the ongoing pandemic. Their extremely predictable response was to ask for me to be sure to send the pie recipes. Considering making a small change to each recipe to make sure I’m invited back next year.

@CecileLeroyUX @lauraklein I legitimately hope she is your ex-friend or at least you never eat at your house. My mother once suggested I use low fat yogurt in a banana cream pie and we no longer speak.
@CecileLeroyUX @lauraklein That “most people are sloppy about following recipes” thing is at least doubly true of my entire family. There’s a reason I do the baking and that reason is that I am able to read and follow simple instructions.
@susanalmon They’re not great bakers, but I feel like they might catch on if I’m quite that blatant. I was considering just adding a fake ingredient or making up a technique. “First, you need to savage the apple flour.”
They will very politely tell you that sweet potato pie is NOT pumpkin and isn't a shame that there's no room for you at the table this year. If you're lucky, in a couple of years you'll be allowed back, but you can only bring drinks, no food, because you're not to be trusted.
I feel like this is the sort of thing that will get you disinvited from Thanksgiving dinner in the South.
