Mike Burgess, the Director-General of Security, said this in his Annual Threat Assessment: “People applying for a visa to come to this country are required to read and acknowledge a list of the things Australia values. One of the principles listed is a ‘fair go’ for all, encompassing mutual respect and tolerance. I reckon a ‘fair go’ for all could be a good place to start. I appreciate this is not traditional territory for a spy chief, but I firmly believe if more Australians – not just visitors – embraced the ethos of a fair go, mutual respect and tolerance, the temperature of our security environment would be several degrees lower.” This is exactly why we need to put Australian values at the heart of immigration policy. At present, visa applicants must sign the Australian Values Statement as a good faith commitment. Some have no intent to comply. Moreover, where values have been breached, Ministers and bureaucrats have been known to put the interests of a visa holder ahead of Australians. A Coalition Government will make the existing Australian Values Statement a legally binding and enforceable visa condition for all temporary and permanent visa holders. Visa applicants, for example, who do not believe in equal rights for men and women, or who are likely to import sectarian hatred, or who have no commitment to democracy, will not be granted a visa. Visa holders, for example, who break the law, or who work against Australia in the interest of another country, or who undermine freedom of speech and religion, or who intimidate others, will have their visa cancelled and be deported. With our Australian Values Migration Plan, we are closing the leniency loophole and putting Australians first.

The Snowies and the brumbies have helped shape our national identity. They’re also an important part of my life. I grew up and worked amongst them. I stood alongside families, horsemen and people who had travelled to Kiandra just to protest against the NSW Government’s aerial cull. No bureaucrat will understand how to manage this land more than the locals. I want to see the locals back in control. I want to see the brumbies protected.

Alongside @JNampijinpa today we paid our respects to Kumanjayi Little Baby in Alice Springs. Her loss devastated a family, shocked a community and angered Australians across the country. She will never be forgotten. As a nation, we cannot look away from the circumstances that contributed to this tragedy. If we are serious about honouring her memory, we must be prepared to ask why this happened and what needs to change. We desperately need to take practical action to improve the safety of women and children, strengthen communities, reduce access to alcohol and crime, and ensure taxpayer funding into town camps and communities is doing what it is intended to.

To read Richard Scolyer’s “final farewell” letter is to recognise that our nation has lost a truly great and gracious Australian. In that goodbye, Professor Scolyer said that “cancer does not define us.” Yet Professor Scolyer’s more than three decades of work has defined cancer research and treatment – inroads that ultimately will help humanity defeat this dreadful disease. Professor Scolyer will be remembered for his breakthroughs in melanoma treatment, including immunotherapy, and being the first patient to receive brain cancer treatment based on what he helped develop. Among his many achievements was his nurturing of young doctors and researchers who will carry on his work. If Professor Scolyer was driven by a responsibility to try and “change the future for others and leave the world a better place”, he did just that. He was brave, bold and challenged the status quo. He was an Australian of the Year, yet Australians will honour him for all the years to come. Our heartfelt thoughts are with Richard’s wife Katie, his children Emily, Matthew and Lucy, his wider family, his colleagues in medicine, and all those whose lives he changed for the better. May Richard Scolyer rest in peace.
