Simplifying Traditional Architecture and Urbanism. Considering the importance and the future of the craft of our built environment. 🏛linktr.ee/ofpineconesand… Boston, MAJoined June 2023
@treasuresson @kpt206 @Architectolder I agree, I went to college in Miami! Very similar there. But it’s also the case that the buildings in those places are very very new and they won’t last. They’re eventually going to have to spend a fortune to replace them when they inevitably fall apart in the next 50 years.
@kpt206 @Architectolder @treasuresson I totally agree! I was going more under the notion that it’s going to be near impossible to reach a resolution to abolish modernism completely from historic cities. Marrying the two might be the only way to do it.
@Architectolder @treasuresson First things first, I’m a traditionalist. But modern architecture definitely can exist in the same spaces sometimes***. It needs to be respectful of context, proportions and materiality. Playing with the classical orders in new ways could yield interesting results!
@jnlgrrg @theprovenwinner @michael_diamant Evidence is actually the definition of a grounded argument. Whining and not substantiating anything is what babies do. Maybe you need to go back to school dude. They teach you this stuff on like the first day.
@theprovenwinner @jnlgrrg @michael_diamant Separate person who came later on. Great architect who wanted to create a new American architecture. Modern ideas but still used classical principles; how it should be. Never said that all civic buildings look the same. Obviously not the case.
@jnlgrrg @theprovenwinner @michael_diamant Concept in architecture school usually goes more along the lines of: "my building is by the ocean, so I'm gonna make it very fluid and organic like waves". It creates this concept for itself rather than strengthening its presence in what is already existing.
@jnlgrrg @theprovenwinner @michael_diamant Also, American civic buildings have a distinctly Palladian typology. This dates back to Jefferson and his love for Palladio. You can see the same influences in UVA's campus, designed by Jefferson, as well as the White House and US Capitol. It ties into American civic traditions.
@jnlgrrg @theprovenwinner @michael_diamant Given the student attends Notre Dame, I will assume that the project is in the same place, as I know that yellowish clay bricks are local to that area. Visibly the project is made of these. There was a brickyard on the campus once, where they produced their own yellow bricks.
@az_daniel_ @jnlgrrg @theprovenwinner @michael_diamant And I think you’re mistaken. Local culture climate and context is literally the driving factor of traditional architecture. That’s how you can tell what city you’re in oftentimes just by looking at a building. Modernist buildings are placeless and self centered.
@az_daniel_ @jnlgrrg @theprovenwinner @michael_diamant But isn’t it? Palladian influences? Yellowish stone facade? Sited in some form of city grid. You can tell immediately it’s in the American midwest just looking at the building.
@jnlgrrg @theprovenwinner @michael_diamant Pretend the drawings at the beginning are of a legitimate well designed project and not a parti. The ‘concept’ doesn’t have to be self proclaimed. Why can’t it’s design and form be dictated by the local materials, local building traditions, and context around it?
@MikaLongue@michael_diamant Hahaha funny you say that because I actually did try. I’ve learned to love my college experience in the US and found my own way with professors who have helped me. I think as a whole though, architectural education is definitely focusing on the wrong things…
@MikaLongue@michael_diamant They do actually frequently. It's where they advise you to make a "concept" and a weird shape and stuff a whole bunch of programs into it. Maybe slap a few solar panels on top and some green walls inside so that you can claim its sustainable too. 0 attention paid to context.
Architecture is a silent influencer of behavior and emotions. It's time we tuned in and designed with empathy and understanding. #EmotionInArchitecture#HumanCentricDesign
