The ways in which we tried to get treatment and help for Durga and how all institutions failed her and her unborn calf ultimately. x.com/i/article/2089…
Thank you @aboyobbhuyan for raising the issue of Durga's death. But, just want to put some facts across.
Durga was fixed with a radio collar by a Bangalore based NGO in 2023. The collar malfunctioned apparently by end 2024. That collar weighs around 20kgs. Since March 2026, we have been trying to get the collar removed. We petitioned the DFO, the Chief Wildlife Warden, the MLA and also our Honourable Forest Minister @jayanta_malla in June, 2026.
She was already assessed as very sick by a govt vet in January 2026. Yet, despite all our efforts no one from the administration or government bothered to treat Durga. This is institutional apathy. This is institutional murder. We cannot let Durga's death go in vain. @assamtribuneoff carried a story on her in April 2026.
Assam: Durga, a Wild Elephant died at a tea garden in Numaligarh after allegedly being denied medical treatment.
For three days, she was ill. Locals say she was bleeding in her urine.
Locals sought medical help, but the Forest Department did not extend any assistance. No
NEWS | Durga, a wild Asian elephant in Assam’s Golaghat district who had been struggling with a heavy, non-functional radio collar around her neck for several months, died on Monday afternoon.
@assamforest#Assam
It is with the deepest sorrow we announce that Durga, the wild Asian elephant in Golaghat district (Assam) for whom we ran a protracted campaign since March, 2026 to get her malfunctioning radio-collar to be removed, passed away today afternoon at Doigrung Tea Estate under the Khumtai constituency.
She was very sick in the last few days. We petitioned all the relevant authorities in the Assam administration and in the government to make an urgent intervention to save her as she was already suffering from multiple ailments and the malfunctioning radio-collar had exacerbated her ill health. But, unfortunately and tragically, there was no response till now from the authorities.
We sincerely hope that strict protocols are put in place by the MoEFCC for the installation and monitoring of radio-collars in the wild Asian elephant populace. And we also hope that authorities pull up the officials who allowed for Durga to die a slow, painful death.
Let Durga’s death not go in vain.
Team,
Elephant Monitors Assam

📌 Important: making videos while harassing wildlife, taunting or chasing wild animals according to India's Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 (Wildlife Protection Act, 1972) is a serious punishable crime. The legal measures that can be undertaken for the harassment of a Schedule I specie like wild Asian Elephants are discussed below:-
1. Protection of severe punishment Schedule-1 under Wild Animal Act: Wild Elephant is a very safe animal including Schedule I of this law. Chaos or Harassment (Hunting/Teasing): According to Article 9 and 2 (16), the act of shaking, trying to take selfies, chase or obstructing a wild animal is considered 'hunting' or abuse. Punishment System (Section 51): If convicted of this crime can be sentenced to 3 years to 7 years and fined at least 25,000 rupees.
2. Social Media Surveillance and Arrest by Forest Department special attention: Currently the Forest Department monitors social media reels or videos as spying. Viral Video Proof: If anyone makes a video of elephant harassment viral, the Forest Department can directly arrest the accused (Non-bailable arrest) taking that video as legal evidence.
3. Other Legal System Indian Code of Justice (BNS): Case filed under BNS (former IPC) for attacking wildlife or causing hazards in public places. Vehicle seized: If someone makes videos of an elephant shaking or chasing with a motorcycle or car, the forest department may also seize the used vehicle forever. Closing: You can post normal videos on social media from a distance, without harming elephants or other wild animals or disturbing them, there is no interruption. But to collect views or likes by harassing and torturing wild elephants and bringing them in danger, the authorities must provide severe punishment to the culprits.
** It would be good if the videographers who harass the wild elephants should read it carefully or else we will demand to take action from this time**
*In the above videos, the herd of elephants were tortured unnecessarily while eating food. Stop this delay and take action 🙏 "

On 27 June 2026, Elephant Monitors Assam met with the Honourable Forest Minister of Assam, Mr. @jayanta_malla at his office in Guwahati. We submitted two important petitions. One, regarding his urgent intervention in the case of Durga, the wild Asian Elephant in Golaghat district who has that malfunctioning radio collar attached to her neck. After repeatedly taking her case to all concerned authorities, we are truly hopeful that our respected Minister will take the required urgent intervention.
Secondly, we have also proposed an Elephant Sanctuary for discarded domestic elephants in Assam. Such a sanctuary will be the first such project in the Northeast region and would enable necessary care and treatment for these elephants. A step like this will also be immensely helpful in stopping the illegal trafficking of these Schedule I animals.
Elephant Monitors Assam was represented by our Managing Trustee, Shyamanta Ram Phookun and our Founder and Director, Shaheen Ahmed.
Wtf is happening in India? Is this how "Vishwaguru" looks like? Such unspeakable cruelty against the voiceless and helpless. Thank you Supreme Court for unleashing the monsters within humans. Will these barbaric murderers ever face justice ? @Iyervval
Head of dog chopped in greater noida west. Is this violence acceptable to judiciary & leaders? Why real issues of corruption, faulty policies, SOPs & myths about rabies which are reasons for such cruelties not addressed @PMOIndia@BJP4India@RSSorg@myogiadityanath@CP_Noida
PRESS RELEASE
We have recently heard some disturbing news that a domesticated adult male tusker, Ram Prasad, under the Golaghat Forest Division is in the process of being sold to a buyer from one of India’s southern states.
Under the Wildlife Protection Act (1972), the Asian Elephant is a Schedule I animal accorded the highest amount of protection under the Indian state. Any such buying or selling is strictly illegal.
If such news is true, then we request the Forest Department of Assam, the Government of Assam and the concerned authorities to immediately intervene and stop this illegal sale and trafficking of elephants from Assam to other regions in India.

On 20 May, 2026, our trustee Samiran Xopun met with the respected MLA of Khumtai, Mr. Mrinal Saikia @Mrinal_MLA to enquire on the next steps regarding the safety and treatment of Durga, the wild elephant. Samiran also submitted a petition to the honourable MLA regarding the immediate treatment of an injured wild elephant in the same area which has been reported widely in the local press.
