From the time of the Assyrian to the Achaemenid empires, Aramaic became the lingua franca of administration and trade in the Near East and Central Asia, with Aramaic-speaking traders getting all the way into China. Yet due to subsequent conquests, Aramaic was greatly reduced and is no longer spoken in Central Asia (except by a few hundred Assyrians in Kazakhstan who were deported there by Stalin in the 1950s).
