#ElectionTwitter Here is a map of the average PVI by county during the Fourth Party System of 1896-1928, also known as the Progressive Era. During this period, the Democrats were strong in the South and the West, while Republicans dominated in the Northeast and Midwest.

In the 21st century, every state in Presidential elections has voted for at least 1 loser, and most of them 2-3. But the only state which has voted for losers of different parties is Iowa (Gore '00 and Trump '20). All other states have voted for losers only within one party.

CA, MN, and WA are the only three states to have always voted for a member of the Roosevelt family whenever one was a major party presidential nominee--that is, TR in 1904/12 and FDR in 1932/36/40/44. However, none of them voted for the Cox/Roosevelt ticket in 1920.

If Virginia and West Virginia had been united during the 2016 presidential election, the state would've voted 48.07% for Trump and 46.19% for Clinton. The margin of 1.88% for Trump would make it redder than Florida and bluer than Arizona in the same year. Here's the county map:

There have been two Presidential major party nominees from Arizona, and neither one was born in a state. Barry Goldwater was born in Arizona Territory three years before statehood. John McCain was born in the Panama Canal Zone.
