Robin Veldman @scHeerenveen He spent eleven years building players at this club. He left to learn the world. He came home to clean up the wreckage left by a superstar. Robin Veldman's appointment at SC Heerenveen is one of the more sensible, identity-driven hires in the Eredivisie. To understand Veldman, understand what came before him. In summer 2024, Heerenveen gambled on Robin van Persie — a Dutch icon, but a rookie head coach. Inconsistent results. A cup elimination by amateur side Quick Boys. And the symbol of it all: a 9-1 demolition at AZ. Van Persie left for Feyenoord in February 2025. Heerenveen needed the opposite of a gamble. They needed someone who knew them. They called Robin Veldman. Veldman is, at his core, a Heerenveen man. A CIOS graduate (Dutch sports academy) from the Flevopolder, he began his coaching career in SC Heerenveen's youth academy — and stayed eleven years. Crucially, he worked with the talents who'd define the club's reputation, including a young Hakim Ziyech before his rise to Ajax, Chelsea, and beyond. When sporting director Johan Hansma announced the hire, the language was all about belonging: "With Veldman, @scHeerenveen brings in a coach who knows the club culture well." This wasn't an outsider parachuted in. This was a homecoming. What makes Veldman more than a sentimental hire is where he went to sharpen his craft after Heerenveen: - Four years in Ajax's famed youth academy - RSC Anderlecht — U21 head coach, then interim first-team boss, then senior assistant - Queen's Park (Scotland) — his first permanent senior job - Club Brugge — head coach of Club NXT (their reserves, in Belgium's second division) plus U19 duties in 2024/25 Heerenveen, Ajax, Anderlecht, Club Brugge — four of the most respected development environments in the Low Countries. Veldman is a pure product of the academy-pathway school. Here's the fascinating part. Veldman ALSO plays attacking, possession-based football — built on aggressive pressing and a high defensive line, organised around five core values. So how is he different from van Persie, who also wanted attacking football? The difference is structure and flexibility. Veldman talks specifically about the structural principles behind his system AND the flexibility within it. Where van Persie reportedly refused to adjust as a match fell apart, Veldman builds a base system designed to flex. Same attacking ambition. Far more tactical maturity underneath it. He gives the fans what they want — verzorgd en agressief, attractive and aggressive — but with the structural foundation to survive the bad days that broke his predecessor. He took over in March 2025 with the club in disarray and steadied it to a 9th-place finish — restoring order. Hansma's mandate was explicit: performance, talent development, lef (daring) in play, and restoring the club culture with an innovative lens. That mandate is Veldman's entire identity in one sentence. A developer who plays brave football and understands the institution he's serving — exactly what Heerenveen, a proudly Frisian club built on producing and selling talent, needs. - Develop players — eleven years in Heerenveen's academy, four at Ajax's, reserve-team work at Anderlecht and Club Brugge. Few coaches are more development-rooted. Perfect for a selling club. - Fit & alignment — a club legend who embodies its culture, hired specifically to restore it. Director and coach aligned on values before day one. - Attractive football — aggressive, possession-based, high line. The excitement the fans want — with structure behind it. - Open-mindedness — articulate on structural principles and in-system flexibility. A modern, thoughtful tactical brain, not a dogmatist. - The honest caveat — his only prior permanent senior head-coaching job (Queen's Park) was brief, and steadying a club to 9th is stabilisation, not yet transformation. The high line and aggressive press carry risk — the same risk that sank van Persie. The full-season, top-half push is the unproven next step. Robin Veldman is the antidote to the famous-name gamble — a homegrown developer who learned his craft across the best academies in the Low Countries, came home to the club where it started, and restored order after a superstar's chaotic experiment collapsed. He plays the brave, attacking football Heerenveen craves, but with the structure and flexibility.
