🇩🇿 🇳🇪 | Algeria has donated 4 helicopters to the Nigerien Armed Forces as part of efforts to strengthen defence and security cooperation between both countries. The package comprises what appears to be 2x ATE Mi-24 SuperHind Mk.III attack helicopters and 2x Mi-171 transport helicopters, alongside ammunition, spare parts, maintenance equipment and logistical support. The SuperHinds are extensively modernised Mi-24Vs, upgraded by South Africa’s ATE with improved avionics, weapons and countermeasures. All 4 helicopters departed Algeria for Niamey today, 9 August 2026.
The new Syrian Air Force is gradually restoring some of the aircraft it inherited from the former Syrian Arab Air Force. In addition to Sukhoi Su-22UM combat trainers that have recently been seen flying over Syria, a MiG-23UB combat trainer has now also been spotted active and airworthy. This aircraft is among the MiG-23s that survived the extensive Israeli airstrikes against Syrian military air bases following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Those strikes were intended to destroy the former Syrian Arab Air Force’s aircraft and helicopters and deny Syria’s new government under Ahmed al-Sharaa the opportunity to inherit a functioning combat-aircraft fleet. The return of an airworthy MiG-23UB is another indication that the new Syrian Air Force is gradually recovering, repairing and returning surviving aircraft of the former Syrian Arab Air Force to operational use. This left video shows Syrian MiG-23 pilot Abdullah al-Obeido, known as “Abu Aziz,” a native of Kafr Nabl, returning to the skies over Idlib today in the MiG-23UB after 21 years away from flying. His return carries particular significance because he had refused to bomb his own people under the former regime. Twenty-one years later, he is flying over Idlib again, this time for the new Syrian Air Force. Brigadier General Mustafa Bakour, Chief of Staff of the Syrian Air Force, was present for the occasion.
