The argument that "if you didn’t fund his work, you cannot question his decisions" is ethically flawed and dangerous in the context of democratic accountability. This you are doing is actually creating a false dilemma: that the public must crowdfund journalists, or forfeit the right to demand truth and independence. Journalism is a Public Trust, Not a Ransom situation. The "fund me or else" argument treats independent journalism like a hostage situation, that if the public does not directly pay or fund a reporter, then he is justified to sell his objectivity to the highest bidder. Journalism is a profession built on a voluntary commitment to public service. If a journalist can no longer afford to operate independently, the ethical choice is to change careers or seek legitimate media grants, Accepting high valued assets from the powerful entities he is tasked to monitor is not even an option unless his objectives has changed.

This is not a far-fetched question. Blessed Mhlanga a journalist with Hstv was arrested and detained for months because he interviewed the late Blessed Geza who was critical of Mnangagwa. I have watched most of the ZIPRA and ZANLA interviews by these gentlemen and some of these war vets are very blunt. Cde John Nyamupingidza claimed Dabengwa was a Rhodesian spy if I remember well, Cde Lalelani claimed Tongogara, Robson Manyika et al killed Chitepo and he knew even where the fuses used for the bombing were hid in Lusaka. I watched these because they were unfiltered. Now that Charamba et al are involved how much of that independence will exist. If you wanna know what I am talking about, look for the interview that Masimba Musarira of the ZANU leaning - The Patriot, did with the late Cde Kenny Ridzai (Colonel Rtd Constantine Mabuya). The moment he started talking about the abuse of girls by leader, the likes of Badza etc in the struggle, he was cut short. Part 2 was never uploaded. These ZANU trinkets don't come without the the Diddy oil.
