@PaulRoundy1 @simonmaechling Could not agree more. There are few scientists who will stand up against bad science that is pushed by their tribe. Science is a pure endeavor that follows the evidence. Scientists are human beings that live with a tribe and want to stay employed.

I actually want many pro-science voices. I want trust to be restored in scientists. That starts with scientists being trustworthy. That is critical and ignored by the pro-The Science crowd. To them, it is only through turning a blind eye towards prior and current failures of scientists to be truthful that the public can be brought around.

I should track down the many posts and the many replies when I have posted similar replies on posts where he is not engaging with people making substantive criticisms? That is a waste of time. @simonmaechling makes accurate statements about chemistry and rightly points out people who hold a-scientific beliefs, but when it comes to science communication - he misses the mark. He acts as if the lost in trust came out of nowhere and is baseless. We still have doctors and public health officials push a-scientific positions and neither he nor most "pro science" accounts will hold them to account because of tribal loyalty. I will give you two specifics. Scientists and doctors who believe sex is "assigned at birth" (it is actually immutable at conception). The second is those saying transgender medicine is "life saving" - that contradicts the science.

I have watched his interactions over long period of time and the pattern has been clear. Have yet to see him engage with someone giving a good faith criticism. I don’t mean me, I mean anyone. He has reacted if I say something in support of what he says. Many of his posts are accurate and on target, but not those around science communication or trust in science.

@illini_leaf @drterrysimpson I want good, trustworthy public health officials. We do not achieve that by giving them a pass when they are neither trustworthy nor good at there job. Believing them unquestionably is faith, not science.

@illini_leaf @drterrysimpson I did bot say conspiracy- I said lies and misleading statements. I gave concrete examples. You countered none of them. You seem to believe that evidence based medicine means trusting bureaucrats and not evidence. I disagree.

@illini_leaf @drterrysimpson State’s attorneys general sued to be able to give blockers to children. They make open statements in support of rhat and worse (cross sex hormones and surgeries). They lie and say these are life saving interventions.

The major medical associations all back gender affirming care. Many state public health officials have come out publicly in support as did federal under last administration. All of it despite the clear evidence of harm and lack of evidence for long-term benefit. Public health officials said there was equipoise around public masking and that was a lie. The consensus before covid was against public masking. Stating that the lab leak was a conspiracy theory, meeting behind close doors and having people change their position, then releasing public statements. Saying that NIH never funded gain of function. Saying that the vaccine stops transmission. There is a short list. There is evidence behind each of these (that officials said things they knew to be not true). If you believe I am wrong- please be specific in which item is not true.

@illini_leaf @drterrysimpson Why should we support public health officials how lie to us? Who put their tribal allegiance above science? A doctor can treat my broken bone and I will trust them. If a doctor wants to talk to my kids about how it is completely safe to take puberty blockers, not so much.

Women's intelligence clusters more around the middle. This means on average men and women are equally smart. Chess and poker are played by people at the tail of the distributions. There are more idiot men than there are idiot women, but there are also more genius men than there are genius women. So; separating based on sex can make complete sense in non-athletic competition. What makes no sense at all is letting men compete in the woman's category.

@patrickDurusau @simonmaechling Ignorance did not trump scientific data, tribalism did. Our public health officials made decisions in direct contradiction to the science known at the time. This is at the heart of the loss of trust and it is not addressed by those who were on the wrong side.
