Honestly, this is an operational assumption rather than a cryptographic one, and it’s a cliff: fine at t−1, gone at t. For our short-horizon default use I think it holds up well; for long-dated capsules I wouldn’t lean on it alone and would layer in a VDF. That said, I’m still early on the deep crypto here (call it 10% of the way) — this is an early prototype, and putting it out in the open is exactly the point: questions like yours are why. And if there’s any chance to work on this properly together, that would be amazing.

Great questions. I did a bit of research, and it was helpful for me too. I'm not a cryptographer, but I checked: the Quicknet network used by tlock started with a 12/22 threshold (22 nodes, threshold of 12) and is operated by the League of Entropy, a group of independent organizations, each holding a share of the distributed key. Whenever new members join, they perform a resharing protocol, so for the current, exact (t, n) values, the live group file at api.drand.sh is the authoritative source. Experimenting on Zcash 🧪 — ZTCP lets you seal ZEC + a secret message until a future date. The message is timelock-encrypted with drand: no one, not even the recipient, can open it early. Shielded, no EVM. Early prototype

It’s drand tlock. The beacon signs each round r with its threshold key — sig(r) = sk·H(r) — and round r maps to a fixed wall-clock time. That signature is exactly a Boneh–Franklin IBE key for identity r, with drand’s group key as the master public key, so you encrypt to the future round. Nothing can open it until the beacon reaches r and publishes sig(r) — which is the decryption key. drand never sees the message and holds no funds; the only assumptions are its liveness and that fewer than the threshold of nodes collude to sign r early.
