Ghana owns 30% of the logistics revenue from container handling charges, but the duty you pay at the bank goes directly to the government. That means 100% of the duty revenue goes to the government, in addition to its 30% share of the container handling revenue. So the high cost of import duties is entirely the result of government policy.

We will continue pushing our advocacy on import duties for cars and data prices. Will need to draft over 1,000 credible posts to sustain the campaign over the long term, while also managing my schedule. So it won’t happen right now. It may take a year or two, but I believe the public outrage in just these few tweets should show the government that people are not happy with what is going on.

Used Elantra $2,200 that’s like 25,000ghc but if I want to send it to someone in Ghana, the Ghana Government says you have to pay 65,156ghc on duty. In fact, this nonsense has to stop. Looking at this for example makes the Government’s reason why extortion has been normalized.

You are too slow man. Both duty prices are not reasonable. People buy cars that are over 10 years old because they simply don’t have the money. You don’t punish people for a system that you created. In the US, the UK, and Canada, where wages are much higher, people still buy and drive 2002 model cars. Their property taxes or vehicle registration fees are generally lower because of the car’s value. They don’t increase those charges simply because someone chooses to drive an older car.

If the government truly cares about people importing overage vehicles into Ghana, then why not reduce import duties on vehicles that are less than 5 years old to encourage people to buy newer ones? A country with a minimum wage less than 20ghc a day. How on earth do you genuinely expect that person to afford a car that costs over GH¢250,000? The overage penalty on vehicles is just another greedy tactic to extort people who cannot afford newer models. Government officials enjoy duty free privileges, inflate budgets to enrich themselves, and then impose duties of more than 50% of the value of goods people import into a country that cannot even manufacture cars, electronics, and industrial machinery locally.

Those people in the comment section defending the government for charging GH¢65,000 in duty on a GH¢25,000 car are the same people who go to a car dealership and scream, “You’re greedy for selling a 2011 Corolla for GH¢100,000.” Imagine that dealer staying up until midnight trying to find a cheaper car so the majority of Ghanaians can afford one, dealing with the stress of shipping it, and then, after it arrives in the country, the government, which is supposed to make things more affordable, charges over 150% of the car’s purchase price in duties and overage penalties. They know that more than 97% of the people cannot afford cars that are less than 10 years old. Whatever you defend in the name of your political party affects you every day.
