Google is about to rip a major C driver out of the Linux kernel and replace it with Rust. It’s Binder, the IPC driver Android has depended on for years. The Rust version is already in the kernel, and Google is now preparing to remove the old C implementation entirely. Google says the Rust version is easier to maintain while matching or even beating the C version in performance.

I always find it funny when someone on the Internet says "ZFS is memory hungry" or "ZFS needs at least 8 GB of ECC RAM to run". Nonsense. To prove it, I installed #FreeBSD 15.1 (64 bit!) on a 23 year old PC, with ZFS and only 1 GB of RAM, running multiple jails without issue. 😎

From the kernel’s perspective, a Linux container does not exist as a single object. There is no “container” data structure and no system call that creates one. Instead, a container emerges from a collection of ordinary kernel mechanisms applied to a process. By combining process creation, namespace manipulation, filesystem setup, privilege restrictions, and resource controls, user space constructs an execution environment in which the process has an isolated view of selected system resources.

A heterogeneous SoC can run Linux on its application processors while separate real-time cores run FreeRTOS or bare-metal firmware. Linux's remoteproc framework can load firmware onto these remote processors, start and stop them, and manage resources required for their operation.
