Something remarkable is happening: a parade of Western leaders are making a pilgrimage to Beijing to strengthen ties with China. Not long ago, Western leaders were launching political campaigns rife with China-bashing. What’s driving the shift? Most importantly, China is now *the* dominant force in global trade and has become a huge consumer market. Being on good terms with China when it comes to trade is simply strategic common sense. China has also established itself as a trusted, cooperative partner in international affairs, especially when compared to the US. This may surprise those who consume Western mainstream media, but it’s widely understood elsewhere. A recent survey by GlobeScan found that favourable views of the US have fallen sharply, while perceptions of China have improved significantly. And, of course, Trump has pushed Western middle powers away from the US and toward China. His threats to acquire Greenland, his suggestion that Canada should become a US state, and his erratic trade policies have unsettled allies. When middle powers weigh their options, China increasingly looks like the more stable choice. There’s even a vibe shift in the US, although more so among the public than among business and policy elites. A recent report by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace found that 62% of Americans believe their lives would not get worse if China gained more power than the US. We still need to be clear-eyed about what all this entails. Much of the engagement is pragmatic rather than principled. Negative views of China are still shared loudly and widely across the West. The US remains caught between its imperial reflexes and geopolitical reality. But the direction of travel is unmistakable: the West is being pushed — by economics, by instability, and by its own contradictions — toward deeper cooperation with China.
